Dr. Cantwell and his staff specialize in treating children who suffer from vision problems that interfere with a child's ability to read and learn. Research shows that up to 80% of learning is dependent on vision. As such, an undiagnosed vision problem may have a profound effect on a child's education.
Many of the symptoms of vision problems, such as difficulty concentrating on classwork, daydreaming, or poor/slow reading are similar to those symptoms displayed by children affected by learning disorders. Vision problems that interfere with learning and reading can easily be overlooked or misdiagnosed as learning disabilities, such as ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia or LD.

Dr. Dennis Cantwell, O.D., was first introduced to vision therapy during his first year as an undergraduate in college at the University of Connecticut. His interest was not sparked through classwork, though, as you might expect. His two younger brothers had been having troubles in school, had been avoiding their reading assignments, and rarely read for pleasure.
Most children have no idea how they are supposed to see. Therefore, it is important that you know the signs of a vision problem that is interfering with your child's ability to read and learn. One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems. The majority of the vision problems that interfere with reading and learning are very treatable.
Vision therapy is much like "physical therapy", but rather than treating the muscles of the body, it works on the eyes and visual system. It is an invaluable tool that has changed not only our patients' vision, but has improved many related areas of their lives as well. The first step of a vision therapy program is a thorough examination with Dr. Cantwell to determine if vision therapy is the best course of care.
Unfortunately, many people do not know the signs of vision problems that interfere with academic success. Most certainly, children rarely report they are having visual difficulties. There are physical clues that point to possible vision problems, but surprisingly, many of the symptoms that would indicate a person is having vision problems seem unrelated to vision.
Many parents often discover that they too have vision problems similar to their children's and ask us if it is too late for them to get help. The answer is - it is never too late! We can help! While scientists used to believe that there was something called a critical period for treating patients with eye turns and lazy eye (strabismus and amblyopia), new research has found that this is not true.

Both of our daughters obtained vision therapy through Cantwell Vision Centers. It was amazing how much we learned through the process, and also how each child had been affected. Luckily we learned enough from the older one's experience to catch the younger one quickly! Thank you to both the Cantwells and the staff for all their help!!!

100% hands down worth every penny! The Cantwell Vision Therapy Center team is outstanding. For my daughter it was a fairly long process, but she was able to correct her problems. It was truly amazing to see her transform and progress along the way. A big shout out to Dr. Sutaria at InSight Eye Optique for initially identifying the problem and referring us to Vision Therapy Center. If you are willing to put in the effort, I would absolutely recommended Cantwell Vision Therapy Center to anyone.

Cantwell and his staff helped my son so much. From 1st grade to 4th grade we did tutors, reading groups, etc. and nothing worked to help my son with his reading issues. In the 4th grade his teacher suggested his reading was a vision issue, and we went to 4 different doctors, multiple prescriptions, glasses, contacts, etc. trying to help him. Finally, one dr suggested that the diagnosis may be convergence insufficiency, directed us to Cantwell, and within a month of treatment my sons reading began to improve.

Great place to do Vision Therapy. I've been going for a few months and it's been huge for my reading skills. The staff is very caring, kind and easy to deal with. I really like how easy the scheduling is for appointments as well. Bottom line this is one of those places that understands how to run a great business.

Many thanks to Dr. Cantwell! We have a history of vision tracking setbacks on both sides of our family, so we were never surprised to see books often sitting by the wayside gathering dust when our children were young. But when we realized that Dr. Cantwell provided a method of correcting this setback that was (a) non-invasive and (b) very easily accomplished, we knew we had to try. I am happy to say that Dr. Cantwell's work has had a fantastic effect on our son who is now a very comfortable reader. My only wish is that we'd started this much sooner than when he was in early high school because
