The only thing that really matters is who you love. After twenty-eight years as an estate planning and probate attorney, that's one thing that I know for sure! Yes, we'll ask you about the money, the tax planning, the way your retirement and life insurance are designated, who gets your jewelry. But we always circle back to the issue of why those things are important.
Who do you love, and how should they be cared for if when you are gone? What is the best tax advantaged way to care for those people? The state legislature wrote one for you. It's called the Intestacy Statute. The state's Will everywhere in the US gives money to youngsters when they turn 18. The State's Will won't give money to charities.

Our primary goal is to provide you with tailored documents, so that at your passing or if you are disabled, the people and causes you love are cared for the way you would do it yourself. Certain people need special attention: disabled heirs, foreign spouses, and elders with medical needs, just to name a few.
From time to time, the Will or Trust isn't clear, or controversy develops over a Will because of other reasons. Either the Will needs to be defended by the Personal Representative, or an heir feels that the Will is not valid, and they challenge the Will. Over the years, we have helped on both sides of these unfortunate situations.
Probably the hardest thing for parents is the worry that comes with planning for a disabled child. We need extra planning for a loved one who has disabilities. Every year someone comes to me wanting to plan for a child or a sibling who has autism, has learning issues, suffers from psychosis, or has a head injury.
Probate is the orderly disposition of assets, using the Court's services, so that assets are collected and sold as necessary, creditors are paid, and property is distributed to the heirs as the Decedent requested. Unlike some states, Washington's probate process can be relatively painless and allows Personal Representatives a great deal of authority in handling estates.
