First I treat any pain, because if you have pain then you cannot have a good quality of life. This includes headaches, sciatica, neck and shoulder pain, low back pain, even internal pain. Then I also treat stress. In our busy world we are all surrounded by stressful situations that can cause many health problems.

I am Mavis A. Bates, L.Ac. (Licensed Acupuncturist) and I founded Inner Harmony in Aurora, Illinois, in one of our beautiful historic districts. I treat all kinds of patients for all kinds of illnesses, with special emphasis on treating pain and on helping with the special problems of women's' health, including infertility.
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting very thin needles into certain points on the body to help a patient feel better. For pain, we usually insert needles right into the area of the pain, in order to bring new blood to the area and speed up the healing process.
For problems that don't involve pain, such as nausea, sleeplessness, anxiety, or many other conditions, needles are inserted into points on the body that have been found, over thousands of years of practice, to help the body heal itself in various ways. Some patients come for acupuncture seeking a general sense of relaxation and well being.

Herbal Medicine is my first passion, with acupuncture being a huge addition from my Oriental Medicine studies. Herbal medicine is based on the incredible ability of the plants, minerals, and sometimes even animal substances to make us feel better, and to even treat some of our diseases. In Chinese Herbal Medicine, we carefully prescribe herbal formulas to nourish, correct, or boost up the specific problems that you may be having.
If you come in with a sore shoulder or low back pain, I will often do a five to ten minutes tui na massage to "open the back" before applying acupuncture. One hour tui na massages are also available. The basic difference between tui na and other massage techniques is that in a tui na session the practitioner is working with the Qi (pronouced Chi - meaning the life source flowing through your body) and Blood of the body.
I tore my rotator cuff rollerblading. After weeks of not being able to sleep my wife pushed me to get an MRI. Immediately after, I was at the orthopedic surgeons office and without even looking at the MRI he said. You need surgery. Let's schedule it for two weeks from now.
Being a musician and a golfer, I could not imagine loosing 4-6 months of my summer not to mention the thought that it could take 6-12 months to rehab with no certainty of getting any better.I was resolved to going under the knife until a friend said that he had tremendous success with acupuncture and highly recommended Mavis.

My son sees Mavis for chronic abdominal pain. He says that her treatments help him to relax. She is very patient with my son and is very knowledgeable. One day we were late getting to his appointment because I had a killer migraine. I apologized to Mavis for being late and I told her why. She told me that she could take care of my migraines. I have had three treatments since and I have not had a migraine. I was experiencing at least two severe migraines a week. It is wonderful to be migraine free.

I began visiting Mavis around 6-months ago. No real ailments, just needed some stress relief. I was surprised at how much time Mavis took to get to know me before she began treatment. She spent almost an hour going through questions about my medical history, more than my doctor has in years! Once she devised her treatment plan, we began with what she calls, "tune ups". There was no pain, and I was very relaxed with her. She gives you about 20 minutes to lay and relax while the acupuncture works its magic, and invited me to take a nap. I never though that would really happen, but it did

I visited Inner Harmony when the shoulder pain from sitting behind a computer for 15 years became so overwhelming I couldn't stand it anymore. My regular doctor said what I was experiencing was normal again, but I'm only 36! Mavis identified specific problems I was happening, developed a plan and got to work. I went to several sessions, and after each time the problem areas start to unwind and relax a little more, until I was comfortable again. I would recommend Inner Harmony Acupuncture to anyone - Mavis is very knowledgeable and I love my visits.

I went to Inner Harmony after I was diagnosed with a tendon tear in my shoulder. The doctor was focused on surgery that would have put me out of commission for 6-9 months. Mavis was focused on healing. In less than 3 months I was better than before - No surgery and a big fan of Mavis and Inner Harmony Acupuncture!
