Services
Erik is an estate planning and tax attorney, and a ten-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Prior to starting his practice, Erik worked for several years as a law clerk at a boutique estate planning law firm in Boston, Massachusetts. While in Boston, he constructed a diverse range of estate plans dealing with a wide variety of personal wealth and unique requirements.
Estate planning is a process for preparing how your property will be managed and distributed if anything should happen to you. While the focus tends to be primarily on property asset management, other important considerations are who will be guardian of your children, or who may make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable.
The death of a family member is a heartbreaking and stressful event. Adding frustration and confusion is how to manage your loved one's affairs after their death. Probate is the process in which the court grants a person the authority to manage assets on behalf of the decedent's estate. Although you may have been named the Personal Representative in the Will, you have no authority to act until you are appointed by the court.
There is a saying that a failure to plan is a plan to fail. That saying rings equally true when starting up a business. Two important elements that every business owner needs to consider is what type of legal entity should the business be organized as (choice of forum), and how, when, and to whom to pass business ownership (business succession).
Starting a successful business takes a lot of hard work. The choices of to whom and when to transfer the business should not be taken lightly. Chances are, if you have an ownership interest in a closely held business, you spent a lot of time, energy and resources to develop this business. You would not like all that hard work go to waste when it comes time to transfer ownership.
