The story of Lumber Boys began in 1948, when Bernard Garbus opened Gotham Lumber at our original location at Second Avenue & 38th Street in Manhattan. The business originally dealt exclusively with lumber and specific products for New York City's carpenters and building trades, and over many years expanded into hardware, paint, and other building supplies carrying products such as Masonite, Gypsum Board, and Fiberglass Insulation.
Around 1972 Herbert Ross joined the company and became a partner with Mr. Garbus. He eventually gained full ownership of the business, becoming its sole proprietor in the early 1980's. In 1992 ownership was passed on into the capable hands of Steven Ross, Herb's son, after he retired. Lumber Boys has been owned and operated by the Ross family ever since.

This place is low key but wonderful. I've popped in to get a couple of small things so far - a small length of wood to repair a dresser (which they cut to size while I waited), and some corner brackets to reinforce said dresser so it doesn't break again! The gentleman working there (I think the owner?) was straight to the point and helpful, and got me exactly what I needed. I'll be back in shortly to get some wood staining supplies for my next project - I noticed they had a wonderful selection while I was waiting. It's nice to support a local business like this one - it&apos

It's a store I've gone to over the last seven or eight years, as needed. I prefer to support hardware businesses over chain stores. I've bought a few hundred dollars worth of supplies, electrical switches, lights, hardware. But it's idiosyncratic and the owner is not overly friendly. Hours are not great if you're not in construction/the industry.
I needed some consideration today, as I asked for some help on a small repair project. His response"doesn't interest me." It was probably ten minutes of time and would have helped his customer.
So I'll use

Absolutely the best go to place for all your custom cut wood needs, I've built desks, tables, bookshelves, closets, and couldn't do it without the Lumber Boys! They're great to work with. They also offer free delivery on larger orders and their drivers have always been timely and very helpful. Great prices too!

These guys are the best in the 5 hands down. I’m a small fry trying to get out there solo and Steve always makes time for me to answer questions or make suggestions, I never feel patronized for not knowing something. I will always use Lumber Boys and will always recommend them to my fellow contractors and home owners.

I walked in this summer and laid out my plans to build a pen for my pet tortoise. I'm not a novice woodworker, but I also wouldn't claim myself to be intermediate.
Steve was incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. He walked me through the options for strong, lightweight wood with grain that would work for whitewashing. He pointed out the tools and hardware I needed to complete my project at the best price.
They offer in-store cuts and home delivery for orders over $100. The 1st is very rare if not impossible to find in Manhattan and the 2nd is absolutely crucial unless you

Stunned to find an old school hardware store smack dab in the center of Manhattan and bonus - someone who knows how to copy keys that actually work in the door when you get them home. Having had keys made any number of times in the past at other shops, then had them NOT work in the lock, made me especially grateful and relieved to - - for once - - have something working the way it's supposed to work on the first try.

I'm writing this based on a phone call, but I am confident the in person will be just as good.
I'm so impressed with this store, especially after having called some of the chains. It's locally run, with great prices and customer service like it was 1950.
We need some interior doors for our apartment. I'd called Lowes which insisted I come in and see a sales person before they'd give me a quote -- even though I know what I want.
I called Lumber Boys and spoke to Robert (son of the owner). He walked me through what I needed to know, answered my 1000 questions, and was

By far the most rude hardware store in the world!
I've gave this place several tries, anytime I've gone in, the staff does not acknowledge you, and seems to not give a damn about what you happen to be shopping for.
Thankfully I'm not in the business and just stopped in for a copy of keys that I needed, but will never shop at this hardware store again.

The easiest thing ever. I needed a few 2x4s for a headboard project and wasn't sure about the hardware to go with it. The nice gentleman cut my lumber and suggested the perfect brackets without making me feel like a construction dummy.
They also delivered the lumber (and me) to my apartment for less than an Uber would have cost me. Love Love Love this place!

These guys are fantastic. They offer a very affordable lumber cutting & delivery option which is surprisingly hard to find in the city. I've worked with Rob on two jobs now and it's been nothing but professional. He works with me on the cuts to keep the costs down and minimize the scrap, and the cuts I've gotten have all been quite accurate.
If you're going to get lumber delivered in Manhattan this is certainly the first place you should call. I've never actually been in the store itself but this service alone earns them 5 stars.

Let's not make this another review about Home Depot. Okay let's do it, since it's relevant and I need to make a few points. First of all, I'm not gonna lecture you on how big box stores are a blight on this city and a detriment to retail service and culture here as we know it. I'm going to assume, like me, you already know that, but sometimes fall into the trap of shopping there anyway. But really? What is happening to our fine city? Did you plan on living in the suburbs?
Anyway, I foolishly started a minor project at Home Depot, despite the fact that two days
