New York Deli
Opening in 1929 & in its present location since 1934, the New York Deli is Richmond's oldest restaurant. We specialize in gourmet sandwiches, served in a neighborhood bar setting. We have a diverse lineup of classic deli sandwiches and rotating roster of bottled beer & drafts. We are the birthplace of the Sailor Sandwich and feature perhaps the best Reuben on the planet.

Though the Deli has expanded and been remodeled over the years, we remain a true Richmond gathering spot. With an emphasis on affordability and quality, we draw a mix of guests, old and new. We are also the only location in Virginia with a vintage black and white photo booth! Whether it be for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night, we look forward to seeing you soon!

I have visited NY Deli on many occasions but my experience was enhanced with the addition of an Amazing bartender. Go see Danielle. She has a great personality and is quite the mixologist. All you have to do is tell her what you like and she will make you something incredible. Thank you Danielle.

I recently went here for the first time and I was a little disappointed. Our waiter was helpful when it came to navigating the menu, but there were a total of three things wrong with our order (we had three people in our party). We got two club sandwiches and the bread was wrong on both. Both sandwiches came with fries, but one was supposed to have the fried plantains instead. The food we received was still good, just not correct. The soft pretzels with beer cheese was alright, nothing to rave about. Over all, not very impressed. Still not sure if I will try this place again in the future.

Absolutely love this local spot! The fries are incredible, drinks are well done, and the bartenders make you feel right at home. Dancing is always a blast here and you always feel comfortable jumping right in.

Amazing! Tried the new Duck menu item last night! Even came out with a burning orange for presentation. The chef made sure we were taken care of for the night and our server which I might've overheard it was his first night did a fantastic job. Definitely coming back for this treat, being however slightly expensive, but most definitely worth it.

In the realm of bartending, Sarah is a god among mere mortals. Quiver and quake, ye blind sheep; tremble and fall to your knees before the majesty, grace, and benevolence running forth from her ascended soul like ruby rivers. With her right hand she splashes mirth; with the left she delivers ecstatic spasms; with her laughing eyes and shadowed smile she paints masterpieces. Passion has blinded me - I came for the brunch, but I left with a new religion.

If you've tried this place during COVID and didn't have a stellar experience please come back!!! Today we tried the chicken chowder and it was mind blowing! The creamiest and richest soup I've had in a long time! Wonderful! Good music and friendly staff, what's better?

Got charged for something they said they’d take off the check because I ordered the club wrap and the chicken was burned and they forgot the onions, cheese and tomatoes. The only reason I am leaving two stars is because the fries were good. Also the pretzels and beer cheese was like mash potatoes that were mixed with hummus. Wasn’t good at all. Won’t be returning

Went in Saturday morning , October 9. Sign said Seat Yourself, so I did. Waited 10 minutes. I thought maybe they were slow because they'd just opened. A couple came in 3 tables down and were served pretty quickly. Finally, the waitress sauntered over. I told her I was there 10 minutes before the other couple who were already eating. She said, "Oh, I didn't see you.". At 6'3", I'm pretty hard to miss . I told her the table was dirty. It had crumbs all over it. She said it was just because the table top was mottled marble. Finally, she agreed to clean it. So,

Remarkably, my first time here in over 20 years in Richmond. Won’t be my last. Club sandwich and Caesar salad were both very good. Beer choice is a bit limited but I found an IPA that I liked. My bartender, Jordan, was attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly. Highly recommend.

Food is normally great here. But today was just not one of those days. Our waitress was great - it appeared she had the entire restaurant to handle alone and was running around the whole time we were there. We never got refills or condiments that we requested. Just too much for one person to handle alone though.
The biscuits and gravy were very dry and the grits like spackle. Just probs not gonna order that again and come back when it's not busy or they find more folks to work.

The owner there us a great guy. We get along kind of well. Yet he needs to get his house in order. If I remember correctly, there BLLT was state wide famous. I think my office cafeteria makes a better one now . Its a great place on a Friday & Saturday night. I just miss there few dishes they do well. Also like all fan restaurants ; some of there wait staff don't know how to work to get tipped well.

Mmmm good. So we went to Carytown to go to Little Tokyo but they were closed. We were hungry and stopped by NYD Deli...good choice. We sat at the bar and the Bartender was so helpful with the menu. And he got brownie points for saying I didn't look 46😁. The food. ...my son had the falafel and fries, he said it was pretty good. I had a Makers Mark Old Fashioned....delicious...because my skirt was tight I opted for the kids chicken tender meal...mmmm it was good with the fries and BBQ sauce. I am quite sure we will be back. ...maybe on trivia night. Thanks NYD Deli.

Great spot in Carytown whether you're looking for a solid meal or just want to grab some drinks with friends. As a Jew, the fact that NY Deli has the best sailor sandwich I've ever had is saying something: Never been disappointed here.

I hear they're getting a rooftop patio soon, which will can only make this place even better.

My first time at New York Deli. I came in to try The Ruben but after seeing the menu I decided on the crabcake sandwich and french fries. It had to have been the best crabcake sandwich I've ever eaten. The bread , the Crabcake with no filter, the remoulade, all was was very tasty. I left feeling satisfied and not overly full. I will definitely order this again.
The beer battered French Fries We're probably the best French Fries I've had. ‍ i'm not a big french fry person but these were really good.
My waitress was great, helpful and attentive.

After being seated at the bar, it took at least 5 min for anyone to take our drink order. Once we ordered our food (which I'll get to later) we waited a good 25 min for 2 sandwiches. We both ordered Pastrami sandwiches, mine with sauerkraut. The Pastrami looked old, smelled a bit off, cooked almost too well done, just not fresh at all. The kraut was not your typical kraut, looked more like sliced white onions and had a very vinegary taste. I should've sent it back, but was too hungry. My girlfriend ended up getting sick afterwards.. Not a NY Deli by any means, nice try, not worth it.

Looking for a spot for lunch- our first time actually eating AT a restaurant since the COVID. The Kid recommended it because the they'd had chicken and waffles on the menu once that were "SO good!" We decided to eat here because they have patio seating, so we didn't actually have to be IN the restaurant.
Our server was excellent- cheerful, friendly, attentive without hovering. Three plates of Chicken and Waffles were procured in short order and devoured just as swiftly. The cheddar-jalapeño waffles were fresh and crisp, just like homemade. The chicken tenders were hot and

Food was average as was the scene.
Our server Corrina was exception and sarcastic in a fun way.
Bar was very sparce. Whiskey list was great yet nothing was available. With covid and riots the place was in disarray.
Another chance will happen

All food was bland and unexciting.

Food is pretty good, especially when it's not too busy. Brunch menu is cool, and the sandwich selection is great but not a bunch of substantial vegetarian options and I couldn't find any fish on the menu. Pretty awesome bloody Mary's and interesting cocktail selection. Usually gets crazy busy around dinner and during weekend bar service/events. Solid option if you're walking around carytown though.

At the nearby barber today and stopped in here for lunch,

A very nice laid back old school vibe here...at least during lunch. Kayla was behind the bar and she was able to give me a quick run down on the specials and the favorites. I opted to go with the Boulevard which was the special, nice fresh and tasty roast beef on a kaiser roll with a side of apple cole slaw.

It was very tasty and a good meal for $6 bucks.

Has to believe this place has been open since 1926. It has stood the test of time and it seems they do a good job at all times with all their meals.
