Mount Desert Campground
Mount Desert Campground is located in the heart of Mount Desert Island, just minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Spend your days hiking the mountain trails or biking on the 50+ miles of carriage roads. Plenty of sightseeing and shopping and dining experiences around the many local towns such as Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor await you!

Sail on a schooner, go rock climbing in Acadia, or spend your afternoon at Sand Beach. You can even rent a kayak right here at the campground and explore beautiful Somes Sound. This is our second time at this campground - just a quick stop this time - it is beautiful! The sites are spaced out with trees between neighbors so that there is no feeling of crowding, just of nature.
Services
Mount Desert Campground is located in the heart of world famous Mount Desert Island. Just minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We offer traditional Maine camping with quiet wooded sites located directly on the salt water shore of beautiful Somes Sound. The Mount Desert Campground was conceived and created by Marie and Arnold Allen in 1958.
Per Maine Law, you must wear face coverings in public areas such as the restrooms where physical distancing is less easily achieved. Be prepared to provide us with credit card information as we are making use of contactless payments as much as possible. Please bring disinfectant wipes with you to ensure safety when using things like common use water spigots.
This is one of our favorite campgrounds, ever! The waterfront campsites are breathtaking, the neighbors are respectful campers, and the grounds and facilities are meticulously maintained. Most sites have platforms for the tents, so set-up is easy. The staff are. This is our second time at this campground - just a quick stop this time - it is beautiful!

I wouldn't consider myself a veteran camper, but I've gone camping many times in my life. This was my husbands first time camping, and this was by far the best campground I have ever been to. The area is serene and peaceful, the staff friendly and helpful & just an all around wonderful experience. I couldn't recommend it enough!

Campsites are too close, not enough privacy, always had neighbors walking within feet of my tent platform. Plus so many people arrive late that you'll hear crunching tires creeping past your tent all night. This place is very popular and usually full, just like the rest of the island. They have a Draconian cancellation policy and offer no flexibility in unexpected circumstances. It's really more of an accommodation than an experience, and a way to enjoy MDI without shelling out hundreds per night.

- 1$ 5minute hot shower available. Clean washrooms
- At few sites the car can’t go all the way hence carts are provided to take your stuff to the site.
- Forgot hammer and nails they will provide during checkin and return back during checkout
- Nail are required to setup tent on a wooden raised platform
- If going to Acadia national park this place is around 15 min drive
- Campfire site was cleaned nicely

We had such an amazing stay!! Rainy weekend, but the platforms for our tent were amazing. The location can’t be beat for hiking during the day and going into bar harbor at night for dinner. The bathrooms were very clean and the hot showers were a plus. Will definitely be back for many more!

We had such a wonderful stay last week. We arrived shortly after 10 pm and had no trouble finding the site.
We loved:
1. The float and catching crabs every day. This was pure magic ❤️
2. Morning coffee and fresh pastries
3. Proximity to trails, Cadillac mountain
4. Well maintained and clean bathrooms and sites.
If it was not such a long drive for us we would come back each year

I can’t say enough about our experience here. The campsite itself is beautiful. The sites are situated so although there are a lot of people around, it feels very private. Bathrooms were clean and staff was friendly. Awesome kayaking right from the campsite. Great Ice cream at the gathering spot.

Beautiful campground. Most sites have electric or water access. The bathroom facilities are nice. There is lots to do by the water. You can rent kayaks, canoes or stand up paddle boards. My kids loved catching the crabs in the sound. You can purchase the setup at the gathering place or front office. Ice cream, ice and wood is available as well. There is a trail head near the hill to office that is fun to hike. Its short but the kids enjoyed it. Short drive to Bar Harbor or Acadia national park.

This was our first year camping here and I can guarantee we will be back! The Camp ground is very well kept and the platforms for tents were probably the best idea ever! Everything is very well priced and the people are so friendly including other campers. There is no site marked for swimming but I did notice most people swam at what they have marked as the boat launch on the map and there is also tons of crabs at the dock for crabbing! It was definitely one of the most relaxing and quiet campgrounds I’ve been too.

Wonderful campground with pretty private sites compared to other sites in the area. WiFi at the gathering place and super clean bathrooms. The road is a bit load if you are close to that side. But it is a quiet and beautiful campground! Worth the money and stay!

We had a great time here! The campground is beautiful. The staff was very friendly. The campground and bathrooms were very clean. It was quiet and everyone while we were there respected the quiet hours. Next year we would love to book a site on the water. It is very close to Acadia National park and downtown Bar Harbor so it is very convenient to visit those places. Will definitely return for another vacation!
