Louisiana Karate Association (LKA) was founded in 1961 and is the oldest Karate club in Louisiana. In March of 1965, the first graduate of Japan Karate Association Instructor Training Program, Takayuki Mikami, became the Chief Instructor of Louisiana Karate Association. Sensei Mikami brought his immense knowledge and experience to LKA and continues to do so to this day.
Doug has been one of Sensei Mikami's longest continuously training students. He has traveled to Japan to train several times and has a comprehensive understanding of techniques and concepts which he is able to convey to youth through training drills and individualized attention. Doug will work with your child to develop proper karate techniques, while having fun and learning the rewards of diligent practice in the art.
Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art which develops physical power and mental focus through training blocks, strikes, kicks & body movement. It's a moving meditation which teaches us to clear our minds and be fully present. This empowers us to steadfastly pursue our endeavors outside the training hall as well.
Warrior Spirit Traditional Japanese karate trains "budo, " or warrior spirit. Forge your spirit through training that challenges mind and body. Enhance confidence and courage to uphold your values and promote peace for humankind in daily life. Mindfulness Develop the ability to be more present in the moment, clear your mind & connect with your body through movement & breathing.
Your child will develop confidence, discipline & self-defense skills while having fun. Children learn to block, punch, kick & more with proper form, speed & power. Student practice kata (forms), a series of set movements to defend against imaginary attackers. Students work together to practice techniques & develop communication, respect & teamwork.

You won't find a more authentic traditional dojo anywhere in the south east United States...at least not one that is associated with LKA which is the headquarters of the JKA/AF. 60 years of history under Sensei Mikami

Trained at their old dojo on Metairie Road back in the 80s. When I went back, I was happy to find the Mikami Sensei was still teaching classes!
It's a great place, homey feeling, and newcomers are welcomed and encouraged!

Traditional shotokan karate, instructors are very knowledgeable. I like the traditional Japanese vibe of the dojo. I have been training here for 8 years now and definitely earned my black belt. It's not a school where you pay for a rank promotion.

I attended when I was 6-15 I spent years trying to get my black belt but the instructor never let me test fir the belt and instead of helping like a teacher should he would just make me look like the worst student with no talent.. I was one belt away from being a black belt and it took me 3 years while others tested for the belt in a few months.. once I left I started at tiger rock I earned my black belt in less than 3 years am I am now a certified instructor and my new main instructor is like a 2nd father who helped me achieve unlike this place that wasted my time and money and made me feel worthless

The real deal - traditional karate taught by 9th dan Sensei Mikami. Get ready for a great workout in the non-contact Japanese Shotokan style of karate. Nice dojo, too.
