Waza Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Waza BJJ specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. We are open seven days a week for scheduled classes (both gi and no-gi) and open mat sessions. Waza BJJ opened in 2010 in the Elk Grove community of Laguna West.

The name "Waza" was chosen because it means "technique" in Japanese, which is an appropriate name given BJJ's subtle, yet highly technical nature, and compliments "Jiu Jitsu, " which means "gentle art."To use the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle as a tool for our members to become better, happier, healthier, and fulfilled human beings.

I've trained in martial arts for over 30 years, but due to injuries I was not able to train my kids past a certain level. I looked at different martial arts schools in the Elk Grove area and I was impressed by what I saw at Waza BJJ. I enrolled my youngest son here about four months ago. I am truly impressed at what he has learned in that short of a time period from both Chris & John. These two instructors are very patient and successful in getting all their kids engaged in learning BJJ basics and building solid foundations for future success. I have another son who has excelled to

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this martial arts place. The instructors are outstanding with kids and some have kids of their own studying there. The owner is a multi-champion. The main teacher has black belts in multiple disciplines. The place is kinda small, but that doesn't really matter. It's the quality instruction that counts. Kids are encouraged and supported, but not coddled. And I like that they don't hand out belts like participation trophies. They have a different system that still rewards effort, though.
I picked Jiu jitsu mainly because I wanted my kids to be able defend

I've trained at 5 or so BJJ gyms this one is my favorite. Great instruction and friendly people. Warm ups are BJJ drills instead of a bunch of running in circles, pushups etc. Cannot recommend enough.

I'm a newbie/beginner to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), but I have been doing martial arts off and on for the past 30 years.
I'm also an insufferable perfectionist, so I did a lot of research prior to starting BJJ, and I read with some worry about how "sport/modern BJJ" is fundamentally distinct from "Gracie JJ", and how Americans have strayed from the martial art's roots, etc. Luckily, I've been counseled by many older/wiser students that at the end of the day, what matters more than the specific style is the *culture* of a school. Do the students care for one another? Is there an open, collegial

We came into Waza knowing close to nothing about martial arts in general. I cannot imagine our kids not being a part of this program! The coaches of all youth programs are exceptional. The kids are learning and building on their technique with every session, but, more importantly, being positively reinforced and taught to make good choices and be responsible individuals. Every class is packed with physical activity and we love the focus on work ethic and compassion for others. They love it!

I cannot sing their praises enough! We are grateful beyond words to be a part of the Waza family. It is

Found Waza late 2018, when my family moved to Elk Grove. We wanted a kid friendly place to help our then 9 year old daughter with self-defense and to build confidence. They did not disappoint. During Covid, they held online zoom classes every weekday for the kids to stay involved and active. John and Chris were very patient, taught respect and broke down complicated concepts very simply for the kids. This was the only sport my daughter enjoyed doing and wanted to stick with. Highly recommend! Thank you Waza!

My son (12) has been in the Waza kids' program for the past 6 years. I would tell any parent looking to get their child into BJJ to come to Waza! John the instructor is amazing, he's like a pied piper with these kids! I have watched him with younger and older kid classes, and he does a great job connecting with all ages. I really liked how jiu jitsu is presented to these kids in context of the bullying going on in schools nowadays. John and the other kids instructors truly care about not only teaching these kids the jiu jitsu technical skills, but also the BJJ philosophy. My son really

My son has started his BJJ sessions this week, and I joined in too. It is immediately apparent that this is a safe and welcoming environment. Derek, John, and Chris, the instructors I have met so far are very helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. I was especially impressed by their humble and down to earth demeanor. And it does not stop there, the fellow students were just as welcoming and helpful. Both my son and I look forward to our time at the dojo. Beyond learning new skills and improving physical shape, it is also a great outlet for helping with stress relief and emotional well being

If you're thinking of learning BJJ, You should definitely try Waza. The staff are all awesome and there's a variety of options for your entire family. My kids have been going for 5+ years. The transformation I've seen in not only their ability, but their confidence is remarkable. John, Chris, & Fred are incredibly patient with the kids. They reinforce their teaching with a fun, but not disorganized environment. The kids' program is broken down to three different age ranges with a ton of different time slots to try to accommodate your schedule.

Everyone is extremely friendly and patient. There are people of all ages and experience levels so it’s easy to fit in without feeling judged or out of place. If you’re looking for a place to learn at a comfortable pace with a fun environment and amazing instructors, this is the place to be. The facility itself is very nice and always carefully cleaned. There’s a nice sitting area for parents to watch their kids or if you want to watch a class to see what it’s like before joining. There’s also a changing area with cubbies which makes things easier when you don’t have a chance to stop

I have been trying out different BJJ/martial arts classes for kids in the Sacramento area. I wasn't impressed with many of the dojos. I found Waza and LOVED it. My son attends the kids class ages 7-12. The instructor, John, is sensational. He is energetic and fun while keeping the kids engaged and disciplined. Even though there can be several kids in the class, I see the instructors working with each student individually. They pair up the kids to the best of their abilities while making sure the new students are matched with a kid who can instruct while grappling. I highly recommend

I dropped in to visit this gym for two of their adult gi sessions during the evening. Derek was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable, as were the students. There were between 25-30 people each of the nights that I went, with a variety of belts which provided ample and varied training opportunities. Facilities and mats were clean and enough mat space for multiple pairs to roll at the same time.

Traveling for work and missing my mat time. Reached out about drop-in and was welcomed to visit by Derek. Made it to a very well attended Wednesday morning class. Instructor and practitioners were all very welcoming and I had a great time. Felt like home away from home. Nice warm-up, great instruction and drilling, followed by some great rolls after lesson. Highly recommended.

I decided to try Jiu Jitsu when I turned 50. I was a little reluctant to start due to a bad back but I found this was the best decision I have ever made for conditioning and core strengthening. This is by far the best conditioning I have ever had compared to kick boxing, cross fit or the gym. I no longer have any back issues and am very happy at this gym. Derek and all the instructors are amazing, patient and very good at what they do. More importantly, all of the students go out of there way to pass down the information. There are no ego's and everyone treats you like family. They are all so kind

To start, I highly recommend waza if you, a friend or family is interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I’ve been going to Waza for a little over two years and have nothing but great things to say. Derek and his instructors have created a very welcoming environment at the same time promoting discipline and accountability. As soon as my daughter was old enough she’s been attending the little samurai class and her younger sister is anxious to start as well. The classes really run the gamut of experience. I had no martial arts experience prior to walking through the doors and never felt intimidated

My husband and kids has been going here for 5 years and we absolutely love everything about it. We love the no pressure environment. Derek is a great instructor and understands people's levels and capacity. He's very personable and easy going. My kid's instructor, John, is great with the kids. He keeps the atmosphere light, but keeps his class in tow with structure and instructions. The kids love him and has learned so much from him throughout the years. I have nothing but great words to say about Waza and I highly recommend this place!

The children jiu jitsu classes being taught here are very engaging and fun for all the kids that have come here. They offer free trial classes before signing up. My son had done several various group activities at 4 years old but this was the only one he really looked forward to as did his cousins that have attended. Going to jiu jitsu class became a "treat" for them after school. Every kid picks it up at a different pace so the class is adjusted according to skill level, which is great because my particular son needs a lot of reenforcement and patience. During practice, the more advanced

I've been training at Waza for over a month and I absolutely love it here! Jiu Jitsu was an art that's entirely new to me but Derek and the Waza family made me feel right at home. Even with the steep learning curve of this amazing art, everyone is more than willing to help you while encouraging you along the way. I'm so glad I found this school and I look to stay here and train BJJ as long as I possibly can. Highly recommend!

I've been training jiu jitsu for a while now. I know or trained with a lot of the instructors in town. There are a lot of places I can train but I chose to train at Waza because the owner and instructor Derek is one of the best instructors I have met. He shows a lot of little details that make the moves work and he is able to explain things so they are easy to understand.
The environment at the school is very positive. There are a lot of good students to train with. Everyone is helpful and willing to help you get better.
They also have a very good kids program there. My daughter enjoys training

There are 3 reasons to consider Waza Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

1. if you're looking for a place where you're treated like family and welcomed, even if you're just beginning your Jiu Jitsu journey... this is the place. The "mat cultural" of the school you're choosing is SO important. It starts at the top, with the head instructor, and is represented by his/ her instructors, and students. Waza has the best culture of any school I've been to or visited. They care about the techniques and well being of the students. One of the tenets of the school is that your responsible

I had never done any martial arts before going to Waza to learn BJJ. The difference it has made in my life (at 44!) is enormous. I've gotten into the best shape since my Army days while learning a valuable skill that is challenging, engaging and exhausting in all the right ways. I thought I hated exercise - BJJ has changed that for me. I feel extremely fortunate to have discovered the sport and this school in particular. The instructors are fantastic and the surrounding community is full of good, supportive people. Also worth mentioning is the kids program... the instructor's ability

Not much I can say that hasn't already been said about this great school. My kid has been going here for over a year now, and he loves it. He tried Aikido and Karate before, but he always lost interest after a couple months. Thankfully John is such a great teacher that the kids are always engaged and excited to learn new techniques. He does an awesome job building up their confidence and teaching them to respect themselves and others. He's just a really fantastic instructor who works so well with the kids. My son just earned his grey belt a couple weeks ago and we finally convinced him

Been wanting to learn BJJ to start a good work out routine along with my 3 and 5 year old kids.. To start off, I hear it hard to find a class for little kids to enjoy, but this class, my kids love it, they enjoy looking forward to the Tuesday and Thursday Little Samurai class. Kudos to John for making the kids class such as fun and educational environment. Perfect balance.

As for the adult, the atmosphere and people there are friendly. Derek, our head instructor, create a great learning culture for people of all ages and skill level. Highly recommends this place.

But, here at WAZA, even my little one (4 yrs old) want to come here and practice bjj everyday lol.

I now have two of my three kids in the kids class. There are three different classes, one for the youngsters which is 3-6 years old on Tues and Thurs, older beginner kids 7-12 on Tues and Thurs, and non beginner kids 7-12 on Mon Tues and Wed. (please confirm with with instructors about ages days and time, I'm just going off memory).

The kids love the classes since they are fun, educational, and they learn self defense. If you are interested definitely have your kids try a couple classes and see how they like it.
