Hill, Phillips
A native Californian and grandson of a grape grower, Toby Hill earned a BFA from the California College of the Arts - San Francisco. After honoring the Phillips side of the family with his artistic pursuits and profession in the visual arts, Toby found a new obsession within a new medium, Pinot Noir.

In 1997, Toby Hill purchased land in the Mendocino Ridge appellation, overlooking the Anderson Valley. Trusting in his sense of balance and composition, and with support from local winemakers, he made his first wine using 2002 Pinot Noir grapes grown on Oppenlander Vineyard, nearby in Mendocino's Comptche.
Services
The former ancient river bed of Anderson Creek provides well-drained soils and focused texture. Even though our Gewurztraminer is dry in our usual low residual sugar style, it still packs passionfruit and refreshing full-bodied texture. Planted in 1992, the Roma's vineyard sits at the highest AVA peak of 1850 feet on Lone Tree Ridge overlooking the Anderson Valley.
All tasting experiences at Phillips Hill are available by reservation for your convenience and strongly encouraged. Due to our limited capacity, we only accept parties of 6 or less people. Whether you choose to relax at one of our outdoor picnic tables or sip creekside, each of our experiences offers an ideal setting to taste our Old World-inspired but uniquely Anderson Valley wines.
If you dream of a wine country sojourn without marauding parties of bachelors and girlfriend-getaway hordes, set your GPS to California's less-trodden and sun-kissed Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, two hours northwest of Napa yet seemingly worlds apart. The sunny valley has none of the fog of the Mendocino coastline, one hour west on Highway 128 and nicknamed Dramamine Drive for its twists and turns through ancient Redwood groves.

First time up to Anderson Valley. Asked a friend, who's in the wine business, for some winery recommendations - and Philips Hill was one of them. Great call! This place is so quaint and picturesque. The tasting room and facilities are in an old apple drying shed. We picnicked at one of the tables set out in a grassy area just outside the tasting room. Natasha is a wonderful host. Her years in the hospitality industry show through - she is welcoming, gracious and couldn't have been more engaging. The wines are terrific - well-made, expressive of place and reasonably-priced. What a great tasting experience! In some sort of old sawmill, tasting here is a step back in time, whether under the mill over the creek in the summer, or indoors upstairs in a beautiful rustic tasting room in the wet months. All the wine was well-made, and the pourer was an owner and a joy to talk with on any topic, and spoke enthusiastically about other wineries. We will be back.

Visited Phillips Hill during Pinot Fest 2021. Instead of a normal tasting, the winemaker had three small groups that were given one tasting from a finished bottle, and four tastings from the unfinished barrels that we could blend however we chose! We also enjoyed some freshly baked cheese puffs with our wine. We were able to taste a couple other finished bottles so that we could decide which ones to purchase. It was an interesting spin on your normal wine tasting experience.

Excellent Burgundian style Pinots and Alsatian whites. Their Oppenlander is absolutely incredible and one of the best Pinots I have drank in years. Fantastic service and setting in the rustic apple drying barn. During COVID they implemented a self directed tasting that is really well executed.

We just visited the winery and here is my feedback.
The charge to arrange a visit ($20) is only refundable if you join the wine club. This is very unusual (in all our travels, no other winery has requested such a payment) and can only be justified if the wines are outstanding. On average the wines are Ok but if you are seeking full-bodied bold wines I would go elsewhere.
On the other hand, the customer service is outstanding. The attention provided is awesome.

Well this review is well-overdue! Started 3/1/2020... you know, 14 years ago when the world was normal? Remember those days? We all took vacations and visited cool places like the Phillips Hill Winery!

So, once upon a time before our dearest friend Aunt Rona visited, my partner and I spent part of an afternoon at this lovely winery in Mendocino valley. We walked in and we were promptly greeted by Shannon who proceeded to provide us with a lovely tasting and afternoon experience.

Wines are absolutely delightful... Shannon was so good to make sure she listened to what we liked and provided us

Allison was our host today and was wonderful. We sat in the old apple drying barn which had a lovely breeze despite 100 degree weather. Allison is very engaging and has a fascinating backstory. Went home with a chard and another white.

A great COVID-friendly wine tasting! We picked Phillips Hill for a tasting specifically because their website made it seem like they were taking COVID seriously - and we are glad we did. They are strictly reservation only right now, so the number of people on the property is limited at any time. We were seated far away from any other group, and all of the pours were already pre-bottled and labelled for us! It was a great way to adapt a traditional wine tasting to the pandemic. We enjoyed talking with the two women working there, and really felt welcome. It was a beautiful spot and the wines were

Great wine and and nice people in a lovely setting. We ended up joining their wine club and all the wines they send are good. I'm a big fan of Mendocino Pinot noirs and these are very true to form.

We have enjoyed Phillips Hill wines for several years and became wine club members earlier this year. The Oppenlander Pinot noir is our favorite Pinot in the valley, by a long shot. We ventured back out to Anderson Valley this weekend to take advantage of a members event with Natacha and Toby at Phillips Hill. Not only are they spectacular wine makers, they are gracious and giving hosts. We loved the truffle and mushroom event and feel so grateful to have been a part of such a special and delicious evening with incredible people. Phillips Hill is a must stop tasting room in our books, and we look

I have passed this delightful winery more times than I can mention and today was the perfect day to stop. I was tempted by all the beautiful pear trees loaded with delicious fruit as I entered the parking area. My husband and I walked to the quaint tasting area under the old apple dryer to find the charming Franny welcoming us to taste the delicious wines. The wines did not disappoint. I have not been a fan of chardonnay for some time but theirs was light on the palette and refreshing. The pinots were floral and easy to drink. If you are ever in the Anderson valley dont pass this treasure.

Very few wineries in Anderson Valley have the charm of Phillips Hill. It's a special place. The wines are fantastic. Toby and Natacha are making Burgundy-caliber wines, really some of the most elegant coming out of the Valley. The whites are awesome as well. As a former local restaurant owner I always had a few of their wines on our list.

We went to Mendocino on a little weekend get away !!! We loved going to this winery because it was very different. The owner was going to every table and talking to people. They had apple trees in the front and let us pick them! They knew so much about wine and really treated us like family. The cheese and meat plate was fabulous !!!!

Stunning tasting room!

The property is beautiful. You walk upstairs to enter the tasting room, and it almost feels like you're up in the trees. We came during their white wine weekend open house, so there was no tasting fee!

Overall, a very nice experience with friendly staff at a beautiful winery. We were also able to bring our dog into the tasting room with us! They even offered him a dog treat :)

One of the intriguing things about wine is that while making it is by definition a creative act, selling it - at a tasting room, restaurant, or wine shop - is primarily performative in nature. Creative people are not necessarily performers, especially when it comes to the visual and literary arts, as opposed to something like stage acting or live musicianship.

Landscape painters, for example, might not be the best ones to speak with about the magic and majesty of their work. Maybe a gallery owner, museum guide, or art historian would be better. While I adore the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich

Avoid this place at all costs! My wife and I decided to visit this place while driving by due to its rustic charm. I'm not much of a wine drinker so my wife decided to get a wine tasting for herself. The employee asked where we had been so far. My wife named a couple of places. This was around 12:30 on a Sunday. The employee said I don't feel comfortable serving you. My wife was not acting inebriated in any way. In fact, we had done one wine tasting and then bought a bottle at another place without tasting. My wife was completely upset and humiliated in front of the other customers. I don't know

There are no tasting rooms in Anderson Valley as quaint, historic, and genuinely charming as Phillips Hill. Even before you sample their elegant and refined Alsatian and Burgundian styled wines, you are greeted by apple and pear trees ripe with early fall fruit, with fields of lavender, and with flowers growing vigorously in wooden planters on the deck. Spring and summer tastings take place on the ground floor level of the old apple drying barn. In the wetter, cooler months of the year, tastings are moved to an upper level indoor space. Both spots are quite pretty and decorated with a minimalist

Located in heart of Anderson Valley. One of our many stops in the area. The tasting room is up a flight of stairs. Not good if you have had a few to drink.

We stopped in on a day that a wine club event was happening later on in evening. We were helped promptly in this large tasting room. Pleasantly enlighten and educated on many a things about wine that we didn't know before coming in.

We tried several of the offerings including the Chardonnay. This was smooth, sweet crisp. The man helping us educated us that the Chardonnay was not like any other in the neighborhood. He explained the non

Surrounded by apple trees, this tasting room is housed within a well restored barn. The tasting room is outdoors, but undercover, and has a somewhat magical feel. Maybe it's the deep brown slabs of wood, the hundreds of old apple picking crates, or the oversized melancholic trees.
