Services
NFU was founded by ten family farmers in 1902 as the Farmers Educational Cooperative Union of America in Point, Texas. After its founding, NFU advocated for increased co-operative rights, fair market access for farmers, direct election of senators and voting rights for women. These efforts also led to the enactment of the Federal Farm Loan Act, which established twelve Federal Land Banks.
The NFU Foundation's mission is to empower people to educate our youth, neighbors, media and policymakers of the social, economic and cooperative contributions of family agriculture. Through the NFU Foundation, we support educational programs that provide leadership camps for young people from across the country.
Did you know that farmers and ranchers receive only 14.3* cents of every dollar that consumers spend on food at home and away from home? According to USDA, off-farm costs, including marketing, processing, wholesaling, distribution and retailing, account for more than 80 cents of every food dollar spent in the United States.
Farmers Union provides a variety of educational opportunities for youth and adults at the local, state and national levels. Education is the foundation for preparing citizens to engage in making a difference in their communities, their state, their nation and their world. In addition to our highly successful youth program, Farmers Union provides learning opportunities for adults. Even in the best of times, farming can be an incredibly high-stress occupation.
