I moved to northern Virginia last year for work, not knowing anyone in the area, and started training at the gym as a way to get out and active and meet new people. What I found was an amazing community and knowledgable instructors, like David, that make me look forward to training all day and make my time at the gym rewarding and enjoyable. I highly recommend Abmar Barbosa Jiu Jitsu Academy if you just want to try out bjj or if you moved to the area and are looking for a place to train, you won't regret it!

Abmar Barbosa Jiu Jitsu Academy is the best jiu jitsu gym in the area. It has been over a year since I made the decision to try this sport for the first time and from the moment I walked in to take the introductory class I knew this was the place to be. The coaches here are world class and do an incredible job welcoming new members to the team. The training environment and overall atmosphere in this gym is like none other. I am really glad I joined this gym and really look forward growing in the sport.

I started training at the Abmar Barbosa Jiu Jitsu Academy end of August without knowing not even the basics. I was really uncomfortable fearing that I would look stupid and will be really bad at it. But I was welcomed by everyone from the moment I stepped in this gym.
Everyone is very kind, helpful, patient and friendly. The instructors are AMAZING. They're really attentive, pay great deal of attention and provide good feedback so you can improve.
I highly recommend this gym if you're new like me and woman.

I have been studying BJJ since 2007, and travel a ton for work, always taking my gi with me. The BJJ community is great and welcoming everywhere, but through all those years and places, ABJJ is the best I've trained at. The culture that Professor Barbosa has created is always positive and based on investing in each other as a team. Teammates are always smiling, and there is no room for cliques or hard feelings. Instruction is incredibly technical and hands-on, and beginners learn quickly. Visitors and first-timers are always welcomed. Higher-than-average number of women train here too, with Maria

I'm a 42 year old working in the local tech market. I was a bit apprehensive of joining, concerned about injury or what I would experience with higher belts. I've now been a part of the gym for 6 months and have really enjoyed every minute. I'm in the beginner class, mixed with all ages and genders. Coach David is super technical and communicates very clearly, always making sure to go around and help out on an individual basis during drills. Teammates are also great with no egos. Nobody is trying to make an example or win a gold medal at class but don't let that fool you. The gym is competitive

Never really envisioned myself doing jiu jitsu until my friend brought me along to try the free introductory class. Fast forward a year and I cannot imagine my life without this place.
The instructors are world class and there’s a dynamic group of peers here with every intention on helping you progress.
I’ve seen constant growth since starting here and continue to be both humbled and tested with every class. For me it has become a staple in my daily routine and I can’t recommend this place enough!!

Abmar Barbosa Jiu Jitsu Academy is by far the best Jiu Jitsu school in the DMV. Not only are you rolling with world class athletes, you get a sense of community and family at the gym. The coaches there push you to be the best you can be and it’s excellent place to prepare you for IBJJF competitions. If competing isn’t your goal, it’s an excellent workout and community environment. I highly recommend giving it a try. ABJJA is my second home 🤙🏽
