Our investment philosophy is academically based rather than driven by manager whims and prescient thoughts about future unknowns. Numerous studies have shown that active management simply doesn't work. The data shows that investors/managers cannot consistently beat the market over longer periods of time.
Most investors have the expectation that they can beat the market or that they can pay a professional manager to do it for them. After all, there is something very natural about believing you can do better than average. The human desire to "beat the market" is a powerful force and investors spend a considerable amount of time, effort, and money trying.
How would you feel if you spent a tremendous amount of time to come up with the best investment allocation for you to later find out that you didn't actually own what you thought you did? Unfortunately for investors who use actively managed funds, this is a common occurrence. Another major contributor to poor investment results is style drift.
