With the skyrocketing cost of attorneys and the move in our culture toward making access to justice to everyone a reality rather than just a "pie-in-the-sky" concept, many people are choosing to represent themselves in court. As an attorney, while I support giving people meaningful access to the court system, I generally do not advise potential clients to represent themselves in a contested divorce.
Many people think that they can whip out their iPhone and record their spouse engaging in bad behavior to bolster their child custody case. Some people think it is okay to retrieve their spouse's e-mails if they are kept on the family computer. Some really sneaky people go to the extent of placing GPS tracking devices on their spouse's car.
If you are going through a divorce, the answer is simple: No. Lawyers often turn to the cheapest and easiest source to obtain "dirt" on the opposing party, which are the popular and widely used social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. A picture says a thousand words, right?
This answer may sound like a "cop-out, " but it depends on several factors. If you have a large estate that has a mixture of property you want to claim is part marital property and part non-marital property, depending on the documentation available, your divorce will probably be more expensive.
If you want to use tactics to delay or are seeking to "make your spouse pay" for all the horrible things he or she did to you during the marriage, your divorce will be more expensive.I've heard many clients say "I'd rather you [meaning the attorney, me] get the money than my spouse."

Many people view divorce as a "winner take all" fight to the death. Others feel it is a chance to get even or expose the other spouse for the lazy, good for nothing person he or she really is. Those who hold these views often find themselves broke and unhappy with the result when the divorce is final, blaming their spouse or the attorneys.

We were in need of a professional elder care attorney to help our mother navigate the Medicaid application process. Jenette explained what needed to be done and managed the case to a successful completion. We couldn’t have done this without her. Thank you Jenette for your tireless efforts!

Jenette was wonderful. She responded to all phone calls and emails quickly. Documents were prepared quickly and ahead of her projected timeframe. She was very patient with my elderly mother during the estate planning process. She explained everything so we could understand. She did not try to oversell. She explained services and did not try to push us into anything we did not need considering my mom’s assets. She charged a fair price for services compared to other attorneys I researched. My mother now has piece of mind about what will happen when she passes. Thank you Jenette.

I found this lady to be curt and rude. That's fine if you're dealing with the person Im suing, but to treat a NEW paying client that way is unacceptable.. By the time I decided that this was not somebody I would ever work with, which took all of about 25 billable minutes tops, and $250.00 later in fees for doing just about Nothing, I was done.
