Sewing by the Sea began modestly, in 1991, in an old carpenter shop in the town of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island. In 1998, after infusing the local community with an excitement for quilting and sewing, as well as becoming an authorized Pfaff dealer, the business outgrew the store's location and moved just over the bridge to a 2100 sq.
The store's goal to provide year-round service to the local sewing community continued at the new location, offering a full line of Pfaff sewing machines, premium fabrics for quilting and garment sewing and a wonderful selection of patterns, notions, books. Additionally, a full lineup of classes, in a variety of sewing styles and skill levels, are offered to meet the educational needs of local customers.

I was finally able to visit the other day after weeks of extreme social distancing. Wore my mask and sanitized my hands on entry to the store. I had missed these ladies and this fabulous store. Plus, they had exactly what I needed, as always. They have a wonderful selection of quality quilting fabrics, notions and supplies, as well as garment fabrics in a variety of knits, flannel, fleece and more. I have shopped in stores with comparable quilting cottons, etc., and although they are lovely shops, Sewing By the Sea's prices are consistently less. And the personnel can't be beat. Love this shop

Shopped "at" Sewing by the Sea (curbside service)--staff explained their
policy clearly and were very fair. I can't wear a mask and the staff bent over backwards to fulfill my needs. Not everyone got the message--from the staff:
"After a sad incident with a mother/daughter pair at the shop today, I must reiterate my present store conditions: if you would like to shop inside, wear a mask (ask us for one when entering if needed). If you are unable to wear a mask, we will provide curbside service. Since I have employees with medical conditions, I will not waver on this. If

Visiting from NYC and fell in love with this store. So charming and such a wonderful selection of different things. I found the most beautiful Alice in Wonderland fabric for my daughters window seat, but there were so many great choices it was hard to decide. I would choose this place over shopping in the garment district any day.

Your crafting life as you know it is incomplete if you haven't stopped here yet.
This store has fabric like you literally can't believe. Prints of Archie comics and flying saucers, of vintage seed packs and bikes on parade. And best of all, fabric capturing every part of Maine life - mussel shells, sea glass, lobsters, buoys, mountains, and more.
And the fun doesn't stop there - they also sell prints and easy but beautiful kits for making lighthouses and other simple projects. And they'll give you advice on buttons or materials or anything else sewing-related.
Not to be missed
