In 2004, Tom Thomson pulled together a team of technicians and opened Thomsons Auto Repair, Inc. which has grown to two locations - Grand Rapids and Kentwood. Our technicians have the equipment and expertise to service and repair even the most challenging issues on all makes and models of domestic and import vehicles.

Have used Thomsons on two of my Audi's. This is the only shop I trust to work on my cars. They are always professional at all times and do the best work in GR by far. Can do anything from brake jobs, to engine work and anything in between. Would give them a 6 out of 5 stars if possible.

I’ve had good experiences in the past but the last time was pretty disappointing. I asked for my warm AC to be checked, and dropped it off at closing on Wednesday evening. By Thursday morning 9AM they called and said they checked AC, added refrigerant, and it was good to go. When I picked it up, the AC was warm from the second I left to when I got home 10mins later. There always could be other things at play, but in this case, it felt like the service was rushed and not quality controlled. So ultimately, I paid for a service that was not completed as promised.

This is a long overdue comment. I've always been very satisfied with the level of service, honesty and quality of their work. Mechanics at Thomson's are a rare commodity and a real find. They recommend what's needed, provide a detailed explanation, charge a fair price and do quality work. I've always recommended them but haven't ever left a comment. Today they took it to another level. My 21 year old daughter has a summer job in Maine starting on Monday and she let me know this morning the ABS light was on in her car. Keep in mind the short work week due to the 4th of July

Would and have sent friends here for repairs along with my own vehicle. Honestly never even heard of anyone that has anything negative to say about this place. We took our van in when we were on vacation. We picked this auto shop because it had good ratings and it was close by. They did right by us, got the problem fixed, and we never had problems with it again. They are doing the regular maintenance for us on our daughter's car, since she lives in the gr area. Always good to find an auto shop that knows what they are doing and is trustworthy!

In the past, I have found that the cost of their services is very reasonable compared to other car maintenance shops in the area.
My car broke down on a Sunday evening due to low coolant levels. I towed my car to Thomson’s and early Monday morning I received a call that my car was ready for pick up. I am so appreciative of them fitting me in at the last minute. And they got the work done so fast! I will always bring my car here.

The shop has been there for years, as I grew up in Kentwood I remember passing it an innumerable amount of times. Recently, I've had some set backs in regards to my vehicle and thought since it was so close and they seem to be a staple in the community, why not stop in and see if they could help. As you can see my rating, I was not pleased with the result.

Thompson's charged me $100 for a part that I was able to find myself for $18. Their diagnostic test was inconclusive originally, and I was forced to pay for unnecessary repairs. I VERY hesitantly authorized their repairs. Already dissatisfied, I went to pick up my car and found that they don't take checks (yet they allow credit card payment), my bill was over $1000, and they expected me to have that in cash. I spent my whole afternoon running around to pick up this car by their 6'o'clock closing time (very inconvenient) and now I have to wait to get my car until I have time

When this family business started out they were great at customer service. That was years ago. Now they have more then one location and several employees and from what I have heard from close friends is that stellar service may have declined since then.
I luckily have not needed immediate car repair, but I'm going to base my review on what I do know about them personally; I was never knowingly given anything except quality service. I would still trust them with my car, but as with any shop, I would not be afraid to get a second opinion. Trust, but verify.
