The Isshinryu Karate Academy (IKA) located in Washington, NJ, is the town's oldest, continuously operating martial arts school. Founded in 1980 by Sensei Ben Lapinski, the IKA teaches a traditional type of Okinawan karate. The IKA instructs children from as young as 5, to adults of all ages. Classes are organized by age and are taught by experienced, senior black belts.
Instruction is given is a disciplined but accessible environment with attention to traditional customs and techniques. Outside of training the IKA is a friendly, family-oriented community of students, teachers and friends.

Services
At IKA, the focus is on learning the art and a strong commitment to tradition. Students are welcome to any number of classes in a given month with classes being run three times a week. If you are unable to attend a class, please call to let us know you won't be able to make it. Attendance is up to the individual.

I would highly reccomend this Karate school. I had a shy, non-athletic 5 year old. I enrolled him to get him involved in something. He is now 11 and one of the higher ranked students. The growth he has achieved with the help of all the instructors is amazing. This is one activity he looks forward to and never balks about going to class. This school is such a nurturing and positive influence on the children.

I trained at the Isshin Ryu Karate Academy for over a decade, and I consider my time there to be among the greatest experiences of my life. Sensei Ben Lapinski and the other black belt instructors were among the best teachers and role models I've ever encountered. They take a holistic approach to teaching Karate, so that it becomes more than just defending yourself, informing the way you approach every day life through discipline, humility, responsibility, and so much more. I could not recommend a greater place to learn Karate.
