The team at the Metropolitan Institute of Pain in Chicago specializes in treating back and spine conditions to relieve pain and increase mobility. We take a personalized approach to creating the most effective diagnoses and treatment plans for patients who want an alternative to surgical options. Did you know that back pain is the most common reason patients visit their doctor's office in the United States?
There may be a number of reasons you feel pain in your lower back. Some people experience this type of pain as the result of an injury from playing sports, or they may have suffered a car accident. Even sitting the wrong way while you are working can lead to aches and strains. No matter the cause of your low back pain, seeking effective treatment options is crucial in order to maximize your quality of life.
The narrowing of the spinal canal can lead to pressure on your nerves, causing a condition known as spinal stenosis. The healthy spinal column allows nerves to travel through the nerve canals without restriction, but when spinal stenosis occurs, tissues and bones can grow over the vertebrae to reduce the space that surrounds the nerves.

Dr Murtaza,
Best Dr for chronic pain I’ve had by far. The staff really cares about the patients and go the extra mile to accommodate. I see Dr Shoeb for ketamine to treat depression and I am super happy to report these-treatments work. I haven’t suffered from depression for over a year. It’s such a gift

Dr Murtaza and Dr. Jessica are straight forward, compassionate and highly skilled in pain management. Both my husband and I were patients for several years at Metropolitan Institute of Pain and Telehealth. They care at this facility and provide the best service to all patients. Highly recommended!

I have been a patient for some time now and am pleased with the service and level of care.
The front office staff is professional, courteous and friendly.
I am thrilled with the care I received from Dr. Murtaza. After having right hip/buttock pain for years with difficulty walking/sitting which had only been temporarily allayed with therapy and pain pills as well as muscle relaxers, Dr. Murtaza was successful in relieving my pain and restoring my ability to walk and sit.
After examinations and an MRI, my issue was diagnosed. Dr. Murtaza explained exactly what was happening to cause so much pain

Living with chronic pain, I’ve seen a lot of unkind, uninterested doctors. MIP was an ABSOLUTE EXCEPTION- everyone who works there is kind and professional and works hard to make sure your experience is as comfortable as possible.
I’ve been getting ketamine infusions that have drastically helped with my depression as well as giving some relief to trapped pain cycles in my body. Dr Shoeb is an anesthesiologist and is very familiar with administered ketamine. He was very upfront about the experimental nature of it and that there were no guarantees about relief. I wanted to write a special review for Dr. Murtaza who has been instrumental in my pain management over the last year. Initially I was worried to invest time to see a specialist after struggling with lower back pain, but I was immediately at ease. Dr. Murtaza is empathetic, patient and incredibly helpful. He helped me find several lasting solutions for my pain that have helped me understand my back and whole body better. He created a treatment plan that I was comfortable with and helped me continue getting relief by encouraging me to go to physical therapy as well as acupuncture treatments. I am

After I was diagnosed with two herniated disks in my lower back, I came here and started getting care from Dr. Murtaza. When I first came to see them I couldn’t sit in a chair for more than 10 minutes at a time and after receiving care from them, I got my life back!
I can’t say enough great things about the care I received and the staff in the office. When I wasn’t seeing the doctor, I was seeing Jessica (PA) and she was always so thoughtful and just an all around great person. Both she and the doctor always took their time with me during my appointments and I never felt like they were rushed

I saw both Dr. Murtaza and Dr. Shoeb after suffering from neck and shoulder pain for almost a year. I tried everything to get rid of the pain-- from frequent visits to the chiropractor, massages, acupuncture, TENS units, etc., but nothing seemed to help. My chiropractor finally referred me to Metropolitan Institute of Pain and I feel like a new person! When Dr. Murtaza wasn't available for a follow-up visit, I saw Dr. Shoeb. Both doctor's are so caring and sat down with me to create a step-by-step plan to treat the pain. I finally received an injection for the pain (which I was terrified of at

I recently started medical school and have had debilitating low back pain that's been disrupting my studies and life in general. I never thought I'd be seeing a doctor for back pain at such a young age, but you'd be surprised how many of my friends in school (and my friends who are hunched over their computers in office jobs) are in pain!
I highly recommend Dr. Shoeb! He was very thorough in explaining the game plan for my treatment (which we were luckily able to accomplish during the few breaks I have from school). He also took the time to discuss my MRI results and talk about the newest studies

Stay Away. Monica, who handles insurance, does not know how to deal with approval issues, refuses to take accountability, and does not return phone calls. I was strung along for over 2 months saying that they can't figure out my insurance approvals, and all the while they never would call me back so I had to continuously check in every week. During those 2 months they had me do other therapies that did not require the pre-approval, but booked me with the wrong treatment and also had to cancel one of my appointments because the doctor could not make it. I went elsewhere, and after getting a refreshed

I thought I was required to go here because this specific clinic was covered by workers comp. They just wanted to sell injections, not give actual care. Dr. told me they would "do some PT so workers comp will approve the injections."
The lady I was working with did acupuncture and cupping and nothing else for 5 visits. She told me that she decided not to be a doctor because she didn't want to take anatomy. What?!
I kept asking about manual manipulation, stretches and exercises, and the answer was always "next time." The last time I went, she went on a racist rant so I asked an attorney I know
