Since 1950, the Modern Snack Bar has been a North Fork landmark for great home cooking. The Wittmeier family began their restaurant with a simple premise: to serve good food at a reasonable price to their "family" of patrons. Don't let our name fool you. From a humble beginning of short orders and milk shakes, the Modern Snack Bar has grown in size and popularity through the years.
Services
The Modern Snack Bar has evolved in the years since John & Wanda Wittmeier took ownership back in the early 1950's. Originally a true a snack bar with a grill, six counter seats and a pass-through window to a few stools outside, it is today a full-service restaurant with two dining rooms seating 125 guests.

ASK FOR TRACEY!!!
Great food that tastes homemade, generous portions, for a fair price, served with smiles, great covis, and amazing service.
We ate here back in August and absolutely loved everything.
If you're a parent who once in a while like to enjoy a meal at a restaurant with your kids, this place is the place to take them. My kids are pretty well behaved but toddlers will be toddlers and they get excited and loud once in a while. The snack bar had those wax strips you can bend and make things out of. We loved making bracelets and necklaces. Everyone was so nice and made us feel

Came here with a friend yesterday for the first time. Had the soft shell crab sandwich and the watermelon mojito, which were both excellent! Highly recommend trying the watermelon mojito. My friend had the veggie burger with onion rings, and said they were both very good. The staff was very friendly and a pleasure to speak with. Unfortunately we were not able to try their desserts this time. Will definitely come back again!

Heard they had better pies than Briermere's. These are at least homemade. Heard Briermere's is using an outside baker now. We came for the pies.
Ordered the peach and their famous lemon meringue! The peach was by far our favorite! Fresh peaches, can't go wrong with that. So much flavor and richness. The lemon meringue was a huge piece but mostly meringue rather than lemon. And the meringue was very fluffy and light too. The crust was very light.

Came here on great recommendations from Trip Advisor patrons and were quickly seated. We both started off with the Clam Chowder, which I found to be quite average. Rather sysco like, but not bad by any means.
For dinner, I had the salmon and she had the soft shell crab. Again, both were average. My salmon came out almost well done, so it was on the dry side.
The star of this visit was my salted caramel cheesecake dessert. It was really good and made up for the first two courses.
Overall, with many dinner options in the area, I don't know if I will be back. It didn't grab me that much, but its

I’ve been coming here my entire life. It feels so good even to just walk through the door. There’s just so much nostalgia emanating from the building. The staff is incredibly kind. The food is ultimate comfort. I always get the soft shell crab sandwich or fried chicken. Love them both. The mashed potatoes and mashed turnips are excellent too.

Otto the owner of this fine establishment turned 80 today and we were lucky enough to meet him and experience his restaurant all in one day! Fantastic food, fantastic service and what's even better is that the prices are perfect!
We stopped in on our way further out east to grab some lunch and arrived just as they were opening their doors for business today. Temperature was checked and we were then whisked away to our lovely partitioned table.
Staff all wore gloves and masks and each table was cleaned thoroughly. Ordered their fried clan strips to start, delicious morsels of clam fried to a golden

I have been to the Snack Bar many times since I was young. Walking in, it looks the same as it did when I was a child. It's a very nostalgic place and well taken care of. The food is absolutely delicious and if you don't order a pie to go, you didn't do it right.
COVID Precautions: Modern Snack Bar deserves all the credit it can get! They have taken this situation extremely serious. They closed for quite sometime in the height of the illness. Upon reopening, they have set safety guidelines for all customers and workers to follow. No reservations, first come first serve with a limited

We had such a great meal at the Modern Snack Bar! We needed a bite to eat after a day of pumpkin picking and this was the closest place that didn't have a long wait.
The place looks like an old school diner or a grandma's dining room - down to the window treatments! However, the menu is definitely more expansive and more fun.
I had the soft shell crab dinner - I love soft shell crab but it's rare to find them in NY. The crabs were cooked well - slightly greasy but the batter was crunchy and crispy. The cole slaw was outstanding. He had the seafood platter - also a big hit. The

We visited because a friend of ours remembered eating here when her family came to North fork as when she was a child. The food was excellent. Service was wonderful. They humored her nicely when she was saying that she had been there forty years ago. I bet they hear that a lot!Amy has a soft shell crab sandwich, I had the North fork Ruben, Lisa had the turkey sandwich

Stopped here recently because the beach we normally visit was not accessible, due to high tide. The name is somewhat misleading because this is more of an upscale diner than a place to get hot dogs. I was looking at the hamburger deluxe, but then noticed that the Long Island Duckling was just a dollar or two more. The side dishes included mashed turnip which was, I was told, a specialty of the house. Indeed. The decor and music here was designed to place you in a time warp going back to the 1950s. The service was excellent, efficient and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Cute old fashioned diner. Great service and old decor. Staff all very friendly. Ordered clam chowder bowl, lobster bisque bowl, and soft shell crab appetizer to share among 2 people. Portions were pretty small but we also were not very hungry. Food was of average quality. Lobster bisque had a slightly alcoholic taste 🤷🏻‍♀️ which turned me off but my husband ate that. Clam Chowder was good but nothing to write home about. Had higher expectations for the soft shell crab. It could’ve been more breaded and flavored. It was borderline cold also so I was scared it wasn’t fully cooked

Saturday afternoon was my first time visiting MSB. Upon entering, we were greeted and sat in a timely manner. It was slightly busy, but the wait staff was attentive and never stopped smiling and making us feel like we were their only customers. I had their watermelon mojito which was to die for. It wasn't overly minty or too sweet. It was just perfect!
For our entreés we had the broiled bay scallops with mashed turnips and mashed potatoes and the crab cakes. Everything came out in a timely fashion and was hot. Our food was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing!
My only problem

Been wanting to try this place for a while so we were in the area and stopped in. Cute place, very clean and our waitress was nice. I'm not sure if they have a senior special but there were quite a few tables of seniors enjoying their lunch.
If you are looking for vegan options, skip this restaurant. I broke my veganism for a delicious cup of new england clam chowder and a great lobster salad on a roll.
Don't get the potato salad though, it was actually inedible. It was mostly onions in an odd tasting dressing that was white but did not taste like mayo. Maybe it was spoiled. We let

Every time we venture out east, my husband usually makes a point to stop here for lunch when we are out on the north fork visiting the farms or wineries. Modern Snack Bar has a classic diner charm that looks like it has been stuck in time on the inside. Counter service and table seating are available to enjoy your meal. Yes, it isn't quite "modern" per say as in the name, but that may just be part of the nostalgic they are going for.
The options on the menu have quite a few unique items. They have daily specials available only specific days as well as their usuals. The two main

We have been meaning to stop here forever. My husband and I and 2.5 yr old had a nice Saturday lunch.
It’s real rustic and like stepping back in time. It was clean and the menu classic diner with a few twists.
I enjoyed my lobster salad sandwich and my husband had a classic turkey plate.
Lots of people were taking pictures with the sign before stepping inside.

Modern Snack Bar has been serving up locals on the east end since I was a kid. I think that was when the British roamed Long Island, haha.
Using local ingredients like bay scallops, fresh caught flounder and Long Island Duck are items that you'll find being served at MSB. Just something to point out, Sea Scallops are those big sucka scallops that you'd buy frozen in your supermarket. "Bay Scallops" are the small scallops being brought to you from a Long Islander who owns a boat like Downeaster Alexa.
The end of the year is when I like to wind down and just enjoy the east
