The San Francisco board of Supervisors designated a 19-block section south of Market Street as a Redevelopment Area. After years of delays and setbacks, San Francisco artistic and community groups gathered to collect information about practical needs and cultural aspirations.
Developed with extensive community involvement, the Yerba Buena project planned to put much of the convention center underground while providing low-income housing and cultural and open space.Mayor Dianne Feinstein and the SFRA issued an invitation to developers worldwide to "create.in the heart of one of the world's great cities, an environment in the form of a magnificent urban garden."

Yerba Buena Gardens is located directly above the Moscone Center, in the heart of San Francisco. The open spaces are inviting, yet protected from the bustle of city streets. Union Square and the Financial District are a short walk away. I know this is not an easy time for production, especially while many are working remotely, so I wanted to acknowledge [YBG Festival's] help in such a timely manner, and our appreciation.

On Saturday August 3rd, 2019, I was privileged to see and hear a concert by the AfroSolo All Stars held at the Yerba Buena Gardens. Piano master Tammy Hall, Veteran drummer Leon Joyce Jr., Renowned bassist/composer Marcus Shelby, captivating harpist/vocalist Destiny Muhammad and rising young Oakland saxophonist Ranzel Merritt, filled this glorious afternoon with the sounds of world class jazz. It was an amazing event, and something I will never forget.

I love the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival! It is a beautiful space, and the musicians and artists chosen to perform are amazingly talented, and it's always fun to go see a show there. And it's free!!! In fact, I had knee surgery several years ago, and a week into my recovery I still managed to get myself to the Gardens to catch the show, crutches and all. I wasn't supposed to be on my feet, but I knew it was worth the risk :)

The festival is one of my all-time, favorite things to do in SF! Live music from super incredible artists, poetry, traditional and contemporary dance, and tons more...all free and open to the public. Absolutely the BEST. Plus the gardens are a beautiful place to enjoy live music. Just put out a blanket, relax, and enjoy. Rinse and repeat, all summer long.
