Corte Madera has a rich history behind its establishment as a premier living destination of today. Originally included in a land grant in 1836, the land that is Corte Madera was used in the lumber industry. Once the land was cleared, ranches and dairies were established. By the early 20th century, wealthy families from nearby San Francisco were vacationing in this picturesque area and by 1917, Corte Madera became a town.
It took almost 100 years for Fairfax to incorporate as a city. In 1839 the land that is Fairfax was part of a Spanish land grant. The property changed hands several times over the next 70 years. In 1855, Lord Fairfax of Scotland moved to the area to take advantage of the gold rush in California. In the 1890's, Madame Pastori, an Italian opera singer, opened a restaurant that still stands today.
