At the base of your big toe, you have what is known as the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. Your MTP joint connects your big toe to your foot. A bunion is an inflammation or deformation of the MTP joint that causes a protrusion at the base of your big toe. Bunions may also affect the joint of your little toe; this is referred to as a bunionette.
On the bottom of your foot, you have a connective tissue called plantar fascia. The plantar fascia connects your heel bone to the middle of your foot and the base of your toes, absorbs shock, and provides arch support. Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the plantar fascia becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis can occur when the plantar fascia becomes stressed or irritated due to extreme or frequent stress placed on your feet.
Arthritis, which can affect both adults and children, is one of the top causes of disability for people living in America. Arthritis is a disease of the joints that causes inflammation and stiffening of your joints. Arthritis usually occurs as you get older and is more frequent in women than men. Arthritis can affect various parts of your body, including your feet and ankles.
Fungal nails or toenail fungus is an infection in which a fungus infects the toenail. If your feet have been affected by toenail fungus, you may notice an infection in multiple toes or you may notice an infection in only one or two toes. Along with spreading from toenail to toenail, the infection may spread to other areas, such as your skin or fingernails.
