The Independent Martial Arts School provides a thorough and rigorous education in the arts of Kenpo and Enshudo. Through our curriculum students will gain self-confidence, build character, better develop their sense of teamwork and community, strengthen themselves physically and mentally, and learn how to best defend themselves when there is no other option.
Services
Kenpo is a distinct style with roots in China, Japan, and Hawaii. The Kenpo material taught in our school today is very similar to that which was taught when it was first developed in the mid 20th Century. Emphasizing punches, kicks, locks and takedowns, its adaptive nature helps ensure the best possible outcome for the practitioner.
At the Independent Martial Arts School, we believe that a Martial Artist's key role is strengthening and building up the Community that sustains them, not fighting or winning trophies. Whether Local or Global in nature, IMAS students go above and beyond to leave a positive mark on the world. Between our direct predecessor and the IMAS, hundreds of students have volunteered thousands of hours in support of local events in Southern New Hampshire.
At the Independent Martial Arts School, we are devoted to excellence in the learning, and teaching, of self-defense. Beyond this central purpose, we also seek to foster good attitudes and scholastic achievement among our students. At every opportunity, we encourage them to stay in school, focus on their homework, share news of their achievements with our instructors, and pursue higher education after high school.

Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, Value
I grew up taking classes here (when it was the IKS) and even though I live out of state now, I still make a point to come to class when I'm in the area. The instructors, students, and everyone involved are awesome people and really focused on character development as well as quality martial arts instruction.

IMAS is the worthy, direct successor to the Independent Karate School at the same location. When IKS' sensei retired, the remaining black belts teamed up to continue the IKS traditions and ideals as IMAS. The instructors and the black belts that assist clearly care about their students. This is a "non-full-contact" style which provides students with plenty of instruction in Kenpo, various forms, and katas. Self defense is emphasized. Students learn about the history of the art and about good citizenship in the community. Students advance in rank as skills are acquired and tested

I've been a member of this institution since I was 6, which means I'm approaching nearly three decades of benefiting from this incredible community. As said by others here, I wouldn't be the person I am today without the IMAS and its predecessor, the IKS.
They taught me values & skills like: humility, grit, common courtesy for all humans, basic self defense, courage in the face of fear, respect for my elders, my peers, and those I teach, how to teach effectively, public speaking, relying on physical attacks only as a last resort, and how to ensure it never gets to that point

I started with IMAS over twenty years ago, at age seven. Like many other students over the years, I could not imagine my childhood without the school and its community. I have lived outside the NH area for many years now, but any time life brings me within driving distance, I go back to the IMAS dojo. For me, it is going home.
IMAS is dedicated to training and embracing students from all walks of life. I started young; at that time I wanted to learn karate because karate is cool, and my parents were grateful to have some energy wrung out of me every Saturday morning. In my teenage years, I developed

Without a doubt, the IKS made me the woman I am today. I was a student and then a teacher there from 11 years old on, and even though I now live in Los Angeles (almost 30 years after I started!), these people are my family, and this place is still my home. It taught me martial arts, but it also taught me confidence, hard work, respect, teamwork, being a good student, and discipline. The IKS is unlike any other karate school and is a complete gem in New Hampshire. I have been unable to find anything like it in all of the cities I have lived in. Do not hesitate. Go now, without question.

Outstanding! This school teaches highly practical self-defense skills by means of kindness and patience. Not to mention the other lessons my children have learned: confidence, courage, resilience, leadership, concern for others, quick thinking, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and more. Physically, there is nothing like the IKS program for developing strength, speed, and flexibility. Best martial arts school around--you will never regret sending your children for instruction here.

I'm so grateful that our family found the Independent Karate School when we moved to this area over a decade ago. My son received his black belt from the !KS in 2012, and not only is he well and truly able to defend himself, but he's learned patience, kindness, and self-control from the excellent example set by his IKS instructors. Classes are always supervised by senior teachers with many years of experience, but it's really special to see the way the littlest beginners look up to the teenage black belts, who are there to help because they want to be. This school is a great place

My child has been attending this karate school for a while now, and she absolutely loves it!
One on one training with the students is very common. They work on a variety of different exercises, forms, combinations, etc. They offer regular material classes, and weapons classes on Saturday mornings. (Which a lot of kids look forward to.) They make sure to cover "life" advice, and they strive to influence their students in the most positive way possible.
The classes are well run, and they cover a lot of material within the one hour. You can pick and choose which days you can come, and the

I attended IKS from grade school until I moved away for college. I learned many life skills, as well as perfected my karate skills. Yearly tournaments, holiday events, and outside activities gave me a social group as well as a classmates. The Saturday weapons classes were what I looked forward to the most.

The IKS is much more than a business, it's a genuine school. Students of the IKS not only know their techniques, they know what each move does. Along with kata and pinons, students will learn the history of how the martial arts developed. The headmasters are patient and kind and the older black belts serve as excellent role models for the younger students.
Unlike other schools, you will never be asked to join a "Black Belt Club" to keep costs down. Costs are already reasonable. Other schools will test the students frequently and hold many tournaments a year. Don't be fooled - this gets very expensive

I started with this school at age 13, and as of the writing of this review am age 36. The school is like a second home... with good people willing to help out when you need it. It encourages school work, provides a means of participating in character building charity work, and teaches behaviors that I feel have helped me in my adult life and career. Of course, the school also teaches Kenpo and Enshudo... striking and grappling martial arts... for self defense. I confidently recommend the Independent Karate School.
