Dr. Brooke Smars grew up outside of Rochester, Minnesota and earned her undergraduate degree in Biology and Norwegian (despite being born to a Swedish immigrant) from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. She went on to graduate from Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska and completed an Advanced Education and General Dentistry residency at the University of California - Los Angeles.
A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, dentist, and dental staff to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions. Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet.
A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial dental visit. Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions. Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
According to research conducted by the American Cancer society, more than 30,000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year. More than 7,000 of these cases result in the death of the patient. The good news is that oral cancer can easily be diagnosed with an annual oral cancer exam, and effectively treated when caught in its earliest stages.

Visited West Lake Dental Center for my first cleaning, post pandemic. Dr. Erickson and his staff did a great job of making me feel safe. From check in procedures, protective equipment and HEPA air filters in each room, they are going the extra mile for safety. I have been a patient for many years, and I am so thankful to have always received great care and even more so now. Thank you!!

I had a great appointment today. This is most often the case but I felt extra cared for and safe this time due to the coronavirus situation. I noticed a few changes but actually this dental office has ALWAYS been extra hygienic anyway. I love the friendliness and consistently professional care I receive here.

I saw my dentist, Dr. Erickson, today for an emergency meeting about a painful tooth. He has been my dentist for many years. He is very professional, has a sense of humor, and generous with his precious time. I personally care about all the employees there, as over the years they are still with Dr. Erickson's practice and I've come to know a little bit. (I think it says a lot that the employees are long timers.) They take care of me, and I appreciate that so much.

I work in the building that West Lake Dental is in. I chipped my tooth and they got me in the same morning with Dr. Erickson. In 30 minutes my tooth was as good as new. After that appointment I was experiencing tooth pain again. This time it was a different tooth and again I was seen right away. I saw Dr. Langley for this appointment. He had to refer me to to an oral surgeon to have my tooth pulled. I was very nervous about the procedure. Excellent! My wife and I were new to Minneapolis and looking for a good dentist, we were happy to find West Lake Dental Center. I can not say enough about how much I think of West Lake Dental. I have been going there for nearly 30 years. I have never been pressured into any procedure; I have always been given quick service when needed, and most of all, I really feel like they like to see me and they like the people they work with. I give them grief about all the laughter I hear while in the waiting room. They have fun and also do a great job with me and my family. A great place to go for dental work.
