We are unique among Ice Boat Clubs in having occupied our own clubhouse since our founding in 1880. This has enabled us to preserve an incredible amount of historical data, photographs and memorabilia under one roof, which is on open display for all members and guests to enjoy. In many ways we are the Ice Boat Mecca!
The racing capital for ice boating is Red Bank, N.J. The town's logo is the iceboat and it is even placed in decorative bricks in the center of town. In 1880, eight merchants/sailors created the club for racing.

Organized in 1880 and renowned throughout the world, people come from all over just to see the living history displayed through memorabilia and photos. Iceboating can be traced to the mid 1600's in Holland where boats were used for work purposes during the freezing months of the winter. Complete soft water boats were supported on a cross beam of wood amid ships and a rudder was extended to the ice.

Ice boating or hardwater sailing as the sport is known, had its origins in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century. Goods were transported over the ice on boats fitted with sled runners. What began as work soon turned to play as iceboats sailed upwards of 100 mph, prior to the advent of the automobile and airplane.
I won't pretend to say that I am an expert on this by any means, but I can offer a simple explanation of the basics. At first, I too was mystified about the strange performance aspects of a DN bendy mast. 1) When the mast bends out to leeward, the center of effort (CE) in the sail moves out horizontally from the center line of the boat and down vertically, as the mast compresses.
Greetings from the NSIBYC safety Committee. We welcome all iceboaters here in Red Bank. While some might consider iceboating a potentially dangerous sport, we are proud of a very good safety record. This does not happen by mistake. Our club trains it's members in both ice safety and rules of the road.
