Established in 1990 as Lakewood Orthopaedic Surgeons, Puget Sound Orthopaedics serves the Puget Sound region with comprehensive orthopedic care in musculoskeletal disorders. Our team comprises 16 board-certified surgeons with sub-specialties ranging from joint replacement, shoulder, hand and upper extremity treatment, to sports medicine, spinal and podiatric care.

We're a part of Proliance Surgeons, an organization of independent, locally-owned clinics, providing care to our neighbors in Washington for over 20 years. We've always been dedicated to providing exceptional outcomes delivered personally, and now we've updated our look to reflect our continued dedication.
Dale Hirz, MD finishes his time in the Army as an orthopaedic surgeon and begins private practice in Lakewood. Julian Arroyo, MD joins the practice as the first fellowship trained shoulder surgeon in Pierce County. Spencer Coray, MD joins the practice as our first fellowship trained sports medicine surgeon.

Communicate with your doctor using the MyChart patient portal to request an appointment, send medical questions, view medical visit summaries and request prescription refills. We require 48 business hours' notice for all prescription refills. All medication refills that come in after 12:00 pm on Friday will not be addressed until the following Monday.
Originally from New York, Cheri and her mother Sarah moved west to the Tacoma area 10 years ago. Cheri first learned about Puget Sound Orthopaedics after talking to a stranger at her local gym. She booked an appointment, and has been returning to PSO regularly ever since. When Sarah began to have pain in her hips, Cheri was confident that Puget Sound Orthopaedics would provide her mother with compassionate and superior care.

During this age of Covid19 I have found many medical practices to be rushed, struggling to shuffle patients and rarely friendly, puget sound ortho has managed to maintain a pleasant, healing atmosphere for their patients! Well done!

The staff is welcoming and friendly, while still being professional. My wait time was very minimal. My Doctor explained everything carefully and was very open to any questions. He was caring and carefully administered my treatment, checking to be sure I was OK throughout. I highly recommend this practice to anyone needing this type of service. I will definitely be using them again.

Dr. Corey is great. He has refused to replace my knees because he feels that there are better options to try 1st. This has worked for 9 years. Even though they are bone on bone.
Yes I avoid stairs and do not go on daily walks but I'm able to do my daily task without a lot of pain.
Most doctors would have just replace them.
Dr. Corey is very up front and will tell me if he think it will work or not. I just did another shot in my knee. He said it has a 60% chance of working but feels it is better than replacing it.
I appreciate his honesty and not rushing right into surgery.

I love this place!! The staff is so attentive and caring!! Dr Thomas has preformed 3 surgeries on me now. His caring, understanding and way of listening to me and my concerns, made me feel completely comfortable and at ease.

I have seen Dr. Arroyo and Dr. Heffernan over the past several years and have been more than pleased with the care I was provided. They are both exceptional physicians who also exhibit wonderful personalities and great bedside manner. In addition, the office staff are so pleasant and accommodating. It’s obvious everyone enjoys their jobs. This group would get a 10 if it were available. Thank you everyone for being the professionals society is lacking.
