When considering senior housing options many people think the terms 'assisted living' and 'nursing homes' are synonymous, and while both share a few similarities, they are more different than you might think. The goal of an assisted living facility is to maintain as much independence and self sufficiency as is safe and possible for seniors.
It's important to note that skilled nursing care and a nursing home are two different terms. Skilled nursing care is a short term care solution for seniors who need ongoing medical treatment as they recover from a disease, illness, or injury. Skilled nursing homes are long term permanent housing solutions for seniors, and they offer more medical care than assisted living or memory care facilities.
A senior independent living community or retirement home is a wonderful care solution for seniors who do not require daily medical support but are unwilling or unable to live in their own private residence any longer. Maintaining a home can become more of a burden than a blessing for seniors, so an independent living community perfectly combines the balance of having complete privacy and joining in on community meals and social events.
A residential care home can also be referred to as board and care or a residential care facility for the elderly (RCFE). A residential care home is a type of assisted living, and it is a long-term care solution for seniors who do not need daily medical treatment but do need daily support with activities of daily living.
Respite care, or adult day care, is a short term care solution used to provide relief for the primary caregivers of seniors. Respite care can be planned and scheduled out or used in an emergency situation. Respite care can be a caregiver coming to give relief at a personal residence, assisted living facility, a board and care home, a nursing home or skilled nursing facility, or taking the senior to a center or specific place for adult day care.

Thank you Nestvy for helping me to navigate through finding an assisted living community for my grandmother. She needed a lot of help and your suggestions were great. The team was responsive to my calls and answered all my questions. They were professional and they showed me that they genuinely cared about me. I couldn't have done all that work alone. Thank you!

Thanks to the Nestvy team for your support and resources in caring for my dad. We would like to especially recognize the outstanding support provided by Chimma. She patiently interacted with my dad, even when he was being very difficult. She was always dependable and caring, taking extra steps to be as helpful as possible.

Trying to find a care home for a family member can be stressful. Nestvy really took the burden of figuring out where to place my mom off of my shoulders. Ruthanne's personal and empathetic nature made me feel relaxed and like my mom was in good hands. I would definitely recommend them to anyone struggling with the decision of whether and where to place a loved one!
