Most commonly translated as "the way of harmony", aikido promotes life, understanding, and deep gratitude. Harmony is blending with our environment by changing difficulties into joy and conflict into peace. All physical practice of aikido builds upon principles of gratitude, courage, love, and empathy to develop a stronger sense of self-awareness and to bring forth our true nature.
Gentil Pennewaert Shihan, is a second generation student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. His teaching embodies the traditional spirit of Aikido. Newport Beach Aikido is a great place to come and learn in a very family friendly environment. The class is very traditional and great for any skill level.
Aikido is a non-competitive sport without trophies or awards. Its reward stems from self-improvement and the knowledge you gain after each practice. Practice occurs with different partners on the same or different technique to give you a feeling of how timing, distance, and direction is affected. This is particularly important as you will learn how to blend in all situations.
Aikido is for everyone. Men and women of all ages, body types and physical conditions can practice the art of aikido. Our adult aikido classes offers a flexible class schedule that is sure to fit everyone's busy lifestyle. We have morning, lunch, evening and weekend classes (13 times per week). There is no limit to the number of days or hours you can practice each month, and some people practice twice a day.
Would you like your child to learn better self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-defense while engaging in a fun activity? If so, then the Children's Aikido Martial Art Program will be well worth the investment in you child's future health, physical fitness, and well-being.

My boys and I are beginners at Aikido, and are so excited to have found this dojo. We now have this amazing experience to share together for many years to come (and honestly I would say for lifetime). It is a perfect blend of physical exercise, mindful meditation, and spiritual practice that with every visit brings us sense of wellness, harmony, and peace. There is so much to learn about the martial art and yourself, and with patient and expert direction of Sensei and Charn who have been the most excellent teachers. It amazes me how every time I walk away from the practice, I feel a sense of clarity

Sensei and Charn are truly second parents to my kids. They teach them not only how to defend themselves but also to be respectful, responsible, and decent. I have 2 sons each taking aikido classes 3 times a week for 6+ years already. My third son will go there next year.
I live more than 30 minutes away; my 2 kids have different Aikido classes so I ended up driving there 4 days a week spent 1-2 hours there. It's been more than 6 years and they haven't missed a class. That's a huge investment and commitment in this busy life if you don't think this aikikai is necessary for your kids' future. My

My son had great time at 2019 Samurai Summer Camp even though it was very first time for him. Because of full activities through out the day, 9AM to 3PM schedule went by so quick even for my six years old boy. He is teaching what he learned at the camp to us at home even after the summer camp was over.
I am so glad to send him to Newport Aikido summer camp. Also, nothing can beat the homemade food served at the camp as all children say ^^.

My daughter always looks forward to her class here. We rearranged her after school activities schedule to be able to come to practice three times a week. This dojo is a great place for children to build up their character and to make them stronger physically.
The facility is clean and maintained nicely. The owner has all the reasons to be proud of his own achievements, but he is humble and is the nicest person ever! He has a good sense of humor, which is always a plus :) He treats you as a family member - with care and respect - while challenging you and making sure you make progress.

It is difficult to find a good dojo. It took me a very long time. A good dojo should have a certain spirit that is crafted by an exceptional sensei. The spirit at this dojo is one of disciplined practice, genuine camaraderie, and sincere, yet critical, guidance. There is a very strong familial feeling in this dojo; it is common for the Aikido practitioners to have their children practice alongside them. This includes the sensei’s own family. One thing that stands out is the quality of the people and their relationships that make this dojo great. Sensei Pennewaert stands at the door before every

I cannot say enough good things about Newport Beach Aikido. My daughter (8) and my son (6) have never done any martial arts and wanted to do a martial arts camp. Newport Beach Aikido is all that I found for a full day camp but I was completely sold when they told me that they cooked organic food for the kids. Not only did they offer a healthy cooked lunch and snacks, I did not even have to pack them water for a 6 hour camp AND they came home with a more positive, caring and mature attitude. My kids LOVED Newport Beach Aikido and I was stunned by the difference in my children's behavior. They really

Newport Beach Aikido is a great place to come and learn in a very family friendly environment. The class is very traditional and great for any skill level. My two sons (9 and 7) are in kids class and they also enjoy the learning in well disciplined practice. I personally enjoy Aikido to train my inner-core strength while learning fundamental self-defense skill. Sensei is very kind, patient, and professional. Highly recommended if you are looking for a dojo that offers both high-level spirits and respectful camaraderies!

Highly Recommended. I studied Aikido over 30 years ago, it gave me a more flexible and strong body, a calm disposition and a thoughtful soul. I believe that my Aikido training helped me to pass some very difficult graduate exams. But my sensei moved away and I lost touch.
I believed that my daughter, age 5 at the time, would benefit from Aikido physical and mental discipline, Originally I chose this aikikai for her because of location, then I discovered what a true treasure it was.

I am so fortunate to have found Newport Beach Aikido-Shin Do Kan Dojo and Sensei Pennewaert both for myself and for my family. The adult classes provide a lot more than mere instruction in the techniques and skills of aikido. For me they also bring harmony and coordination between body and mind and are the source of new energy that always leaves me recharged and looking forward to the next class. The children classes are a lot of fun too and my son is having a blast, while also making new friends. Sensei Pennewaert is top notch and is really invested in his students. Our whole family is eagerly

My family and I feel very fortunate to have found Newport Beach Aikikai. My older daughter began aikido here when she was 51/2 years old, almost two years ago, and since then my younger daughter and I have also joined.
My daughters look forward to attending aikido class every week. They love learning new techniques, playing agility games with their friends, and practicing meditation. The children in class are wonderfully supportive and friendly as Sensei expects his students to be disciplined, kind and respectful human beings. Sensei provides a safe environment for children to learn and gain confidence
