Services
Chicago Equine Medical Center provides both primary care for local clients and referral services to veterinarians in Illinois and the surrounding states. We work closely with referring veterinarians to ensure that the pertinent diagnostic tests are completed and that aftercare is appropriate. We provide extensive discharge instructions and referral letters for each patient.
Known as Fox River Valley Equine Clinic, Keith Merritt, DVM established the practice in 1992 with a passion for treating horses. As time passed and the area became more urbanized the horse enthusiast population grew. This growth fueled the practice as it became Merritt & Associates Equine Hospital with a staff and facility dedicated to implementing technological advances in diagnostics and treatments for the betterment of the horse community.
Our Veterinary Technicians and Assistants are knowledgeable and critical members of the Chicago Equine team. They support the day-to-day functioning of the hospital and provide assistance to our veterinarians in the field. Our Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT) are licensed to administer vaccines, sedate, clean sheaths and perform other preventative care services.
The horse is naturally, by right of birth and genetics, an elite athlete. Pound for pound, the horse is able to run faster and longer than any of the other domesticated species, including humans!
In addition to speed and endurance, the horse has the gift of natural athletic grace - the Lippizaner's airs above the ground are foreshadowed by the balletic leaps of the foal at pasture with its mare, and the patterns inscribed by a good reining horse can be seen in the quick turns and spins of yearlings out at pasture.

An emergency can be very worrisome, but there are many things you can do while you're waiting for your veterinarian to arrive. Look at the water buckets - a normal 1200 lb horse should drink two 5-gallon buckets in 24 hours. Horses with an acute episode of laminitis (founder) often appear as if they are "walking on eggshells" with their front feet placed far out in front of themselves.

My senior gelding came in as an emergency on Friday night with colic. Dr. Moreauw cared for him all weekend and the staff were so kind and got him through it. She sent pictures to keep me updated and called at least twice a day to keep me posted on how he was doing. I could not have asked for more! Very grateful!

Summary: Over promises and under delivers. Poor communication and follow through on the day of surgery when it mattered.
Details: I adopted two orphan foals (colts) this April. One colt only had a single testicle descend which meant his castration would be much more involved. When I was researching equine surgical centers, the office staff at Chicago Equine were very friendly, helpful and understanding of my situation, wherein I wanted to bring both colts at the same time, keep them together, etc. I explained to them that these were my babies, and I was quite worried, but was repeatedly assured
