The Chestnut Hill School was founded in 1860 through a bequest in the will of Thomas A. Lee. Designed in the style of the Old Ship Church in Hingham, Massachusetts, the original school building was a chapel built with wood from chestnut trees on Hammond Street and Chestnut Hill Road.
In 1863 the original one-acre property was deeded to a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees for the religious and educational benefit of children in the immediate local area.In the early years the school served children in the primary grades only, eventually extending to grade 6 in 1968. The Chestnut Hill School draws families from 35 communities in the Greater Boston area.

CHS has been a warm, wonderful learning environment for my two kids. The ways in which they are exposed to the world, challenged academically, and taught has been incredible. They look forward to school each day, and the community (both faculty and families) has been a true gift for our family. This is a school that truly lives its mission; what you see, is what you get!

I unequivocally and enthusiastically recommend The Chestnut Hill School for all preschool and elementary years. As this school year comes to an end, we are reflecting not just on the past year but the several years that we have been at CHS– all which have been years of joyful years of growth for our children. Our oldest started at CHS in Pre-K; after we joined the community we wished we had experienced the amazing Beginners year and, therefore, chose Beginners as our entry point for our younger child. We are now in the Upper School at CHS and every stage of learning builds upon the strong foundation

The Chestnut Hill School has been an amazing school for both of our children, and for us as parents. The community is wonderful. There is a real commitment to pluralism and it is apparent in the environment of respect and understanding of differences for everyone.
Academically, the curriculum, faculty and staff are all excellent. We could not be happier about the education our children are receiving. It is a nurturing and supportive environment, as well as academically challenging.

Words can't begin to describe how pleased I am with the Chestnut Hill School. CHS's commitment to academic excellence, diversity and community is evident in everything that they do. Both my kids started there at the age of 3. I have watched them grow from shy kids to confident, empathetic, well informed young boys. The eagerness on their faces to get to school in the morning, and the non-stop talking about their day in the evening, are clear indicators to me that I made the right choice in CHS. CHS has a rich nurturing environment focused on educating the “whole child”. My kids are happy and
