Leon Butler opened Brookside Optical in 1989. He realized there was a void in the Kansas City market for unique custom and designer eyewear. Leon became known throughout the area for fitting hard to fit people, especially people with difficult prescriptions. He found lens and frame manufacturers that make products specifically for the strong prescriptions, and above all else unique eye.
We make eyewear - it's in our blood. We believe a frame should not only flatter and complement, but express who you really are. They uniquely focus on fitting frames with women in mind. They are out of Paris France and were established 30 years ago. Each frame is made with love, which reflects how the brand began.
It started with a desire we just couldn't deny any longer. It was 1987 and we were hungry. Hungry for 'a different pair of glasses'. And we were fired up to get to work. Together with Patrick Hoet (designer and anagram-namesake of Theo), we decided to create original eyewear for own shops in Antwerp and Bruges.
Its founders wanted a reliable form of light manufacturing, open to innovation and flexible in the face of change. Made with real wood the frames are quick and craft-based. Respecting the environment, the workers, their skills and the relevant financial processes. Capable of giving its customers the freedom of choice and genuinely tailor-made objects.

Was looking at buying from one of their competitors before I found these guys. Went to the competitor 3 times and still couldn't pull the trigger. Found Brookside and decided to stop in. The atmosphere was completely different but in a good way. I loved that I wasn't looked at like a $ sign but as a customer. Nick was a huge help and didn't pressure me at all. He actually advised me to shop the competition but there was no need. I was sold on the product and the experience. On top of that, he had my lenses ready in 20 minutes as opposed to a week at the other place. Just went back today and got

I have been wearing glasses for 40 years. Without a doubt, the glasses I recently purchased from Brookside are the best I've ever owned. The visual clarity of the lenses surpasses anything I've had before, and the frames match-up perfectly with the lenses. I was so impressed with these glasses that I purchased an identical second pair with transition lenses. I also have to say that Joe was excellent throughout the process. I'm a firm believer in the old saying that "you get what you pay for" . Although Brookside is not the cheapest place to buy eye wear in town, I can't imagine a better experience

The customer service here is fantastic! I felt that the manager, Nick, really listened to me when I described what I was looking for in a pair of glasses. He then placed a dozen sets of frames in front of me that all fit my requirements. Since I am near-sighted, I can't see myself well in the mirror when trying on glasses. Because of this I have to trust the sales person to an extent, to understand how I want it to look. I have purchased frames in the past, that disappointed me when I finally saw them with my prescription lenses. This time, I was so happy when I tried on the glasses when I could

WOW! In my 35 years wearing glasses, I have never had any one take so much care and concern for getting everything right as Brookside Optical. My first visit, I was helped by both Leon (owner) & Nick (Manager). They took a great deal of time educating me, regarding a new approach to progressive office lenses. With the quality products they carry and the incredible level of service, I cannot imagine ever going anywhere else for eyewear.

I bought my last two pair of glasses at Brookside Optical. After wearing the first pair for 5 1/2 years I reluctantly decided that it was time to get a new pair. Reluctant, because I loved these glasses and constantly received compliments on them. After picking another pair of glasses out at BO, I asked if I could get new lenses in pair #1. I now alternate the two pair and get compliments on both. It really makes a difference when you buy quality frames. After owning pair #2 for a year, I went in to BO to get them adjusted. The man helping me did not like the way that the lenses fit in the frame

Several years ago, I began noticing friends from Kansas and Missouri showing up to events in Oklahoma wearing amazing glasses. I bought a pair of glasses several years ago from Brookside. Nick Alvarez greeted me with a smile and patiently helped me find and fit my new pair of glasses. Years later my frames needed repairs twice in two weeks. Nick was still there with a smile and remembered me after all this time. He was able to lend me a loaner pair and order me new frames quickly and kindly. I had new frames in three days. Five stars!! Nick obviously has a passion for his job. I bought my first three pairs of glasses at Brookside five years ago. I still get compliments on them daily. People stop me while I'm shopping to check out my cool glasses. When I needed repairs, they were done while I waited. So there was no question where I would buy my next glasses. I recently bought new glasses and sunglasses. I am blown away with the new technology in the crafting of the lenses. My prescription didn't change that much, but I can truly tell a difference in the new lenses. The frames are so edgy and different than anything I've seen anywhere else. I'm the cool grandma!

I love Brookside Optical. I get the most interesting and up-to-date style of eye glasses at Brookside. In fact, rarely a day goes by that I do not get some type of compliment on my eye glasses.
The sales staff is outstanding. Nick gives an honest opinion and is quite talented at helping pick out the right pair of glasses. I will not go anywhere else to shop for my glasses.

Every couple of years when I need new frames I convince myself to shop around the city for the best options and prices- I always end up regretting this decision. Save yourself the hassle and just go to Brookside Optical. It's truly the only place in town that I trust to help me find the right frames for my face shape. Joe helped my husband and I out the other day and made finding our new frames the most painless and surprisingly enjoyable experience. If I were you, I would ask for him by name when stopping in.

Okay, I have to say that the Brookside Optical shops, of which there are three, are very pretty, have a wonderful selection of designer (expensive) frames, and very helpful staff. Many of the frames are hip and trendy, but you can also find a more conservative look there if you want. The young man at the Prairie Village location was knowledgeable and very nice, and I had a generally good experience there.
My big beef about these shops is their design. The closest you can get to a big mirror is about six to eight feet because they are all behind the counters. I want to see myself in a big, well
