Services
Muir Wood Adolescent & Family Services is a residential treatment program designed specifically for teens ages 12-17 suffering from mental health and substance abuse conditions. We operate two residential treatment campuses in Sonoma, California. In these safe, comfortable, and structured environments, our compassionate clinicians help teen teens explore and process sensitive issues and learn to manage mental health and substance use disorders.
Muir Wood offers teens a safe, nurturing environment within a beautiful homelike setting in Northern California's Sonoma County. Each campus is a safe haven where they learn to manage difficult emotions, develop self-care and recovery skills, explore more effective ways of communicating and cultivate a sense of self.
Muir Wood is the culmination of decades of adolescent treatment experience. Our clinical, medical and administrative team members are recognized leaders in the field of addiction medicine, the treatment of adolescent substance abuse, adolescent psychiatry, and early advocates for gender-separate treatment in adolescent residential settings.
Parents of children with mental health and substance use disorders need support and care. Living with a child suffering from mental health challenges can be extremely taxing on the mental health of parents and guardians. Parents seeking care for their children often experience depression, anxiety, and other issues.
Teen mental health problems are a significant risk for today's families. Every day, more attention is being paid to the problem of teen mental health and substance use disorders. Reporting indicates that rates of teen depression, anxiety, and suicide are increasing at alarming rates. However, each day also brings new understanding and hope for young people and families facing these conditions.

Very disappointed n this place based on the reviews I had read. Turns out marketing plays a big part in how a treatment center appears to potential clients. If I had to pay out of pocket I would give no stars, but fortunately my insurance covered my sons stay. In fact Muir Wood was eager to get my son to stay for 3 months because they knew Kaiser would pay for it. Don't count on on any follow up. We have had absolutely none since my son was discharged.

We couldn't have asked for a better program to support my son with his mental health. Even after discharge they are continuing to support him through the transition to his new provider. You could tell that the staff cared about the children in the care and they made every effort to accommodate his schooling and health needs. I am so grateful we had the good fortune to send him there when we did. We see our old kiddo back and its amazing.

I cannot say enough positive things about this facility. The staff is excellent and the Clinical Director, Liz Fischel may very well be an Angel on Earth. Keep in mind that the major hurdle to your experience here will be your insurance company. We have Kaiser which is another blessing that made this experience so positive. Have faith that Muir is there to help your son!

We found Muir Wood to be very transparent and more focused on the clients than on just driving there business forward. Our experience elsewhere was not so. Our son made progress after a long spiral downward, and their parent programs were very helpful too. I would say his medical team was excellent.

It didn't work for my son. It felt like a luxury resort with Japanese toilet seat, but clearly disconnected from teens reality.
He made a friend there, and this kid didn't make it, sadly he left on March 2020, at just 17 yo.
I am very sad for his mum and his family. I read a letter from his mum posted about her son. It's heart breaking. Nobody wants this.
So Just be real, a $55k / one month therapy is not going to save your kid. It's a very long process.

I highly recommend this treatment center for adolescent boys. My son did ask to go away for drug and mental health treatment at 17, which was an easier experience than if he hadn't wanted to go. He loved the atmosphere of the home-like-setting and told me he loved that being around boys who are all working toward the same goal of being sober. He enjoyed and appreciated every person that cared for him, his psychiatrist, therapist, teacher, and the house counselors. He said the food there was amazing with having a "5 star chef" and the accountability they learn is amazing. For an experience

In comparison to another residential facility, we found Muir Wood to be focused on helping the child vs. just running a business. The Dr.’s and therapists were great, our child made progress after a long time of spiraling downward, and expenses and the entire process was transparent. Additionally the classes and group sessions offered to parents were exceptional.

My son has just left Muir Woods after a 7 week stay. I wish I could convey the level of insight, care and empathy that our family experienced. He was very sick- physically, emotionally, psychically- with an addiction that was even deeper than we were aware of. We were desperate for help but also extremely cautious in turning over our most important piece of ourselves to strangers. We were scared, reticent, a little suspicious maybe about sending him away. Eventually you realize you must. We researched many programs in many states and landed on Muir Woods. From the first moment of outreach to our

Muir Wood has been a blessing for our family. The entire staff was unbelievably supportive, not only to our son in his time of crisis, but to our entire family. While everyone's journey is different, and the future is ultimately up to the individual, the Muir Wood experience gave our son the reset he needed, and taught him the skills necessary to continue on his path to sobriety when he returned home. Can't thank you all enough.

Our son spent 36 days at Muir Wood in 2017. We had a very positive experience. Amazing staff and very caring. The environment is perfect to take a step back and reflect about life challenges. Actually a place you would consider to spend a family summer vacation. Our son got out of his first treatment with much improvement in understanding his addiction disease and coping skills. The family support program is very helpful. After a relapse, he would only go back into treatment if it was at Muir Wood, he doesn't want to even consider any other place. The only pain point was the constant health

At a very critical time in my son's life. I contacted Muir Wood teen treatment center. I was working with Scott. After I got around all the hoops my insurance needed. I was set up to have treatment for my son. Scott said he would call me. So I waited 4 days from the time he said he would call. So I called Scott to see what is going on. Time is wasting. He told me , that 5 days prior. They decided they did not want to treat my son. He said he should have called. He still would have not said a word, unless I called him. This is so unprofessional. Especially at this very critical time. So parents

Admittedly, I don't have any prior experience with adolescent residential substance abuse centers, so I can't compare. I can only tell you what the experience was like for my son and our family. Deciding to send him away for 45 days was hard for us and the staff was very responsive to our questions and concerns. During his time there, we saw him twice a week in individual family therapy sessions (which were excellent) and for parent education programs over the weekend (where all of us learned about addiction, recovery, communication, etc.). This allowed us to check-in with our son and

Muirwoodteen is a nice, clean place where your son would get personal attention, since they take only 6 boys at a time. I chose Muirwoodteen for my troubled teen because I could sense that the Founder and Executive Director at Muirwoodteen had a passion for the cause of this program. Members of the staff that I met personally, seemed to embrace same values too. I had researched many different institutions and organizations offering similar services, but chose Muirwoodteen because it was the only one in Northern California in close proximity to my home which would allow me to be involved as a family
