Under the leadership of Artistic Director Marc Masterson, Managing Director James McNeel, and the Board of Directors, City Theatre's mission is to provide an artistic home for the development and production of contemporary plays of substance and ideas that engage and challenge a diverse audience. The Mainstage Theatre seats 254 and accommodates a variety of unique configurations to enhance the audience's theatrical experience.

From sewing costumes to constructing sets, the production team makes each performance an authentic, theatrical event. The Charles Morris Building houses the rehearsal hall, as well as costume, prop, and paint shops. The Walter Long Building, a former steel rolling plant across from the theatre, functions as a storage facility for set pieces and materials.

Inspired by stories from the community, The Rivers Don't Know explores the experiences of refugees and immigrants in Pittsburgh. Through three interlocking stories of a 1940s steel miller worker, a Somali family, and a class of ESL students, the production explores what it means to call the steel city home.
First seen at City Theatre in 1996 and based on the writings of Marshall McLuhan, The Medium explores the effect of media and emerging technologies on our perceptions, our psyches, and our personal lives. SITI Company is an ensemble-based theater company whose three ongoing components are the creation of new work, the training of theater artists, and a commitment to crossing boundaries.
For performances on Opening Night and Saturdays at 5:30pm, $20 rush tickets will be available at the Box Office beginning two hours prior to show. Tickets will be held at Will Call. Must present valid ID. Two tickets per ID. A limited number of "Pay-What-You-Want" tickets will be available online, over the phone or two hours before the Saturday 1pm performance.*

Staff has/had so much talent in the past, yet squandered it through petty politics. City Theater could easily have rivaled any Off Broadway house in New York before now.

The theatre company always does a really good job with the shows they do. I'm not always interested in the shows included in their season, but every show I've seen there has been well designed and acted. I look forward to going back for more shows in the future.

As far as the venue and the staff, everything is great here. Prices are reasonable and the theatre always offers a couple “pay what you want” price nights for those that can’t afford the full ticket. I’d recommend catching a show when you can!

The City Theater always has quality plays. It's nice to go a bit early and have coffee and a sweet cookie before the play. Everyone involved is over the top welcoming.

Saw "One Night in Miami" yesterday evening at the City Theatre Company in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. The actors were superb and the brilliantly-delivered script was both thought-provoking yet peppered with comic one-liners. At one stage I was moved to tears. The Theatre is easily accessible and the seats are comfortable, each row offering a generous view of the stage. Recommended.

We have been subscribers to the City Theatre for over 20 years. We love the seasonal subscription because it forces us to take a date night at least once per month. We generally get dinner on the South Side and then attend the show. They always have something fresh and pertinent. You can get a cocktail before the show and mingle in the lobby area where they generally have some type of interactive game or activity that coordinates along with the show or the theme. It's a great time. Have yet to be disappointed!

We love this theater. Have had yearly subscriptions for 4 years now and have enjoyed each play. The Revolutionsts is playing now. Great play: written and directed by women and all women cast. Blends Reign of Terror during French revolution with a 21st century touch. Worth seeing, not a bad seat in the house.

Great new work by new artists. I've held season tickets for a couple of years. I see a variety of plays, but the content and quality of the work at City Theatre is consistently strong, memorable, and often leads to good discussions with our friends and neighbors. This is good, unique theater!
