The York Theatre
Watch this video to see our Producing Artistic Director, Jim Morgan, give a virtual tour of our temporary, new home at the Theatre at St. Jean's (150 E. 76th Street). We are devastated but we will recover. There's damage everywhere from mud and water. We're working to recover archival files, scripts, lighting equipment, costumes, scenery-and 50 years of York Theatre history.

Computers, carpeting, and some lighting equipment will need replacing; irreplaceable are certain papers and artwork. We ask that you keep us in your thoughts, said Jim Morgan. Shortly thereafter, Jim Morgan created a Facebook post and fundraiser which garnered an incredible response. We are deeply moved and grateful to our community of patrons, artists and volunteers for coming together to help the York rebuild after this disaster.

The Mainstage Series presents two or three full productions of new musicals by emerging and established authors. In recent years, all have been world, American, or New York premieres. Each production typically runs seven performances per week for five weeks. Some productions have transferred to commercial Off-Broadway or Broadway runs, and many have received further productions in regional, stock, and university theatres.
The Musicals in Mufti Series presents three to five concert revival readings of underappreciated Broadway musicals for 11 performances each. The cast of The York's The Decline and Fall of the Entire World as Seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter. Photo by Ben Strothmann.

Our acclaimed Musicals in Mufti Series (and a 2018 recipient of an Obie Awards Grant) returns to The York for a special fall series celebrating the legendary COLE PORTER (Anything Goes; Kiss Me, Kate; Can-Can; Silk Stockings). The series includes one of Porter's first hits FIFTY MILLION FRENCHMEN, the satirical revue THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ENTIRE WORLD AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF COLE PORTER, and the rarely produced PANAMA HATTIE.
Each year, The York makes a home for 30 to 40 readings of new musicals a year through its Developmental Reading Series. Our strong commitment to developing new work is an important part of what makes The York unique in the musical theatre community. We make it possible for writers to avail themselves of the opportunity to do a developmental reading and to be able to share it with an ever-growing, enthusiastic audience.
Here at the York, we do our best to make sure every patron has the best experience possible. For that reason, we have a strict no returns policy in order to guarantee the best possible seating for all our patrons. While we do understand that emergencies happen, please attempt to make sure your calendar is clear before you purchase tickets.
Join us as we revisit The York's production of After the Fair. Hosts James Morgan and Charles Wright lead the discussion of this romantic premiere from our 1999 season, based on a Thomas Hardy novella. What happens when a married Victorian British woman writes letters for her illiterate maid and falls in love with the man to whom she is writing?

Really needs a little bit of elbow grease! NO, complete renovation since it's so terribly run down and hasn't been touched for probably 40yrs. Sad and dirty.

Great theatre and very accommodating. You'll see & hear great musicals here long before they ever make it to Broadway.

Most recent show I saw here was "Carmelina" (Lerner and Lane), a little gem of a musical, beautifully presented in "mufti" form (meaning, in the York's parlance, that the actors carry binders and the staging and sets are minimal). The York is a small space, a little difficult to get to in the basement of St. Peter's Church, but it has always been worth the effort in my experience.

Great NY experience! Small, high quality productions. Intimate venue tucked below the St. Peter's Church in Midtown East. Not a bad seat in the house. Perfect for watching shows with pure raw on-stage talent and doesn't have to rely on overblown theatrics.

The size of the theatre and live musicians just off the stage makes you feel like the cast are there to delight and perform just for YOU instead of running through lines like you sometimes feel in larger theatres.

Management really did a great job of keeping distractions for during the performance to a minimum. They walk you into

It was my first time here and I really enjoyed it! The secenery is quite nice, stage is neither big nor small so that you can see well from any seat, seats are new and comfortable. Theatre staff is very kind and polite.
I watched Christmas in hell musical and really recommend it. It is funny, interesting, amuzing, cast is professional, good voices and acting skills. Unusual fairy tale during this holiday season :)

The actors are really good and so friendly. The plays are very well done and performances are very well orchestrated. I love the snacks in the lobby, especially the salmon and dill aperture. The wine is good as well and this is a great date idea. You don't even know it's not on broadway its so much fun.

Clean and well maintained Off-Broadway venue that has a kind staff and produces high quality work. Kind of a strange location but not hard to find.

Never seen a show here that I didn't love. Wish it was on the west side, but honestly, it's worth crossing the island for! Jim Morgan and his team have done remarkable work here. HIGHLY recommend.

Do not EVER apply for an internship with this theater. It is an excellent venue, and professional in terms of performances. However, applying for jobs here is TERRIBLE. The coordinator of internships, Amber, is severely unprofessional and unable to tell you a flat out "yes" or "no" after the hiring process. She will string you along for months without a definite answer; I was a college kid just trying to see what internships were available. Because of Amber, I was waiting for a response if I got the job or not after she told me several times over the course of TWO MONTHS "they were still deciding

Production manager was very unhelpful. Took 2 days to respond to any of my emails and showed no interest to book my performance. The space seems very nice for a variety of uses but it's unfortunate that they weren't able to help my group produce a show there. We ended up canceling the gig mostly because of their delay and apathy.

The York Theater produces some of the very best off Broadway theater. They are well known for their musicals and reviews. The atmosphere is friendly and the sight lines are all good. Located inside St. Peter's Church on Lexington, the entrance is on the side street (52nd) and you then take the elevator down two levels to the theater. It's a gem!

Like the other reviews state, it is really hard to find the entrance to this place. I was looking for 619 Lexington Ave and saw it jump from 601 Lexington to 641 Lexington. We turned onto 54th St and finally saw the entrance. It's a small theater compared to the theaters I've been to in the Theater district, and I think it's located in the basement of the church. Stadium type seating so you don't need to worry (much) about your view being obstructed by those in front of you.

It's a small theater, so don't expect anything grandiose. I saw the Road to Qatar here, a

Hidden inside the church, the York theatre is hard to locate. Once you get to the main entrance of the church on Lexington, be sure to abide by the sign that reads "enter the theatre by the side entrance - on 52nd st". Once in, head down 2 floors and you're there!

It's a hustle and bustle of activities, from the concession and merchandise stand to the small but cosy reception area. The theatre itself it small but extremely cosy, 2 sections separated by a center isle. I was here to watch Yank! A WWII Love Story and though I'm not a musical person, I absolutely enjoyed it
