After oxygen and silicon, aluminum is the most abundant element on earth and the most abundant naturally occurring metal. While this metal is easy to find, it is extremely rare to find it in its pure form due to it being highly reactive with oxygen. Almost all manufactured aluminum is used as an alloy and is commonly combined with zinc, copper, silicon, magnesium, and manganese.
Recycling aluminum alloys provides a major economic benefit due to its versatility and sustainability. Processes used to develop this lightweight material make it strong, durable and the preferred metal for hundreds of applications such as aerospace, automotive, technology and construction. Recycling aluminum requires only 5% of the energy used to create new aluminum mined from bauxite ore.
Cardboard is one of the most commonly recycled items, residential or commercial and that is because over 90% of all products shipped in the United States are packaged in cardboard. The total square footage of all the cardboard packaging totals more than 400 billion square feet. Recycling cardboard not only helps the environment but also is easier to produce than making new cardboard from raw materials.
