A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.
Upon graduating with scholastic and clinical honors from Baylor College of Dentistry and earning membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, Dr. Mark A. Dougherty completed his residency in periodontics at the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Dougherty has served as Clinical Instructor of Periodontics at the Oregon Health Sciences University and as Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontology at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.He is an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association and the Orange County Dental Society.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that over 70% of Americans 65 and older have periodontitis.

Everyone is top notch here. The hygienist is exceptional! She is gentle, thorough, and gives excellent advice, such as using my mouth guard to stop tooth pain and she identified a filling that needed replacing. The periodontist is also very thorough and nice. The receptionist is pleasant and helpful. I highly recommend this office and all my experiences over the many years I have been coming here are positive.

Outstanding first visit with Dr. Mark Dougherty and his staff Leslie, Abbra, and Mia a few weeks ago. For geographical reasons, I had to say good-bye to my long-time Periodontist and find a new one close to home. It was sad to leave an outstanding professional and having to re-start a new relationship with another. My former Perio recommended Dr. Doughtery.

Dr. Dougherty and his staff are very professional and patient. They were very attentive to my concerns and needs. I have anxiety when in confined spaces due to a past trauma and they made me feel 100% comfortable even though we were doing extensive work. They always followed up each visit with a call, explained directions carefully, answered all my questions and were prompt in seeing me on my appointments. Dr. Doughtery gets my full confidence and recommendation.

I was one of those people who were terrified of the dentist. Have had many bad experience with them and just stop going.. Dr. Dougherty's office is awesome. They were all so kind and understanding of my past bad experiences and I actually really enjoyed my treatments. I will now continue to see them and care for my teeth. ❤️

I had gum graft surgery by my longtime periodontist last week. I the roof of my mouth, the source of the skin, started to bleed excessively. My regular dentist was out sick, so he referred me to Dr. Dougherty. He saw me that morning. He drained the blood bubble, applied medicine and sutured the wound.
Dr. Dougherty and his staff were very kind and welcoming. The procedure he performed was done efficiently and thoroughly. He gave me clear instructions for post-OP. It is now 24 hours later, and there has been no bleeding nor pain. He is an outstanding periodontist!

Dr. Dougherty was amazing and his front office staff was so warm and welcoming. He made me feel at ease, answered all of my questions and concerns and he went out of his way to make me feel comfortable. I never felt rushed and that I was just a number. He sincerely cared and took great care of me!!! Highly highly recommend Dr. Dougherty!!!

I have been coming to Dr. Dougherty's office for more than 5 years. He is a wonderful, kind person. He is caring and soft spoken. His staff is excellent. I come for deep cleaning 2x a year and although I can't say I love having my teeth cleaned (who really does??), the experience is good and they are gentle with my sensitive teeth and gums. I have had 3 gum surgeries with Dr. Dougherty. I know I'm in good hands with him and his office. Highly recommended.

I recently had a gum graft surgery with Dr. Dougherty. I was nervous since I heard it can be painful, but I was really impressed with how he put me at ease and explained everything very thoroughly. He even personally followed up with me the next day! The staff is so friendly and the office is clean and modern. I was referred to Dr. Dougherty's office by my dentist, Dr. Myers. I wasn't excited to have my gum graft, by any means, and he really put me at ease. His calm, confident demeanor is VERY comforting. One word describes my experience with Dr. Dougherty's office and that is OUTSTANDING! I was a referral from my dentist and needed a gum grafting procedure done. From step 1 of booking my initial appointment everything was incredible! Dr. Dougherty walked me through the entire process, challenges I might experience and really gave me the impression that he cares for his patients. Dr. Dougherty is amazing! I had to have minor gum surgery, and I would not have asked for anybody else to perform the surgery. Though the healing process was painful, I had regular follow up appointments with him and he always made sure that I would be even more comfortable with my gums after I left. The staff is also extremely nice and professional as well! :) Everyone always made me feel welcome.

I have been going to this office for over five years, the staff are wonderful and Dr. Dougherty is very good. He makes you feel comfortable, he's kind and I have been very happy with the work he has done. I moved to Huntington Beach two years ago and found all new doctors with one expedition, that's correct, I still make the drive twice a year to this office, which is 40 - 45 minutes each way.
