We are a nonprofit private early childhood education center serving children from all backgrounds, incomes, and abilities - a wonderful 'melting pot' where everyone learns together, and from eachother. We opened our doors in 1971 and were the first center on the Peninsula to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), placing us in the top 7% of preschools in the country.
Downtown Hampton Child Development Center was inspired by a comment that Hampton Mayor Ann Kilgore made to a women's group at First United Methodist in 1969. She said that one of the city's greatest needs was child care for children of low-income families in the community. Subsequently, a group of interested people, most of them from churches in the Downtown Hampton area, began meeting to organize a child care center.
Provides a stimulating environment that meets the needs of individual interests, differences and capabilities. DHCDC ranks as the highest-rated program in Hampton (Virginia Quality) and among the top 7% of preschools in the nations (NAEYC accreditation). Studies show that children attending high-quality preschools have higher achievement rates, higher graduation rates, and lower grade retention.
Come experience our nurturing and educated staff, cheerful classrooms and top-notch curriculum. We were the first program on the Peninsula to become NAEYC accredited, which places us in the top 7% of child care centers in the country. We are also among the few centers on the Peninsula to be rated four stars by the state of Virginia.
Now in it's 19th year, the Breakfast to Benefit the Children is DHCDC's most critical fundraiser. This year it also coincides with our 50th Anniversary! An amazing group of community supporters act as Table Captains, ensuring every seat is filled. If you are interested in attending and a table captain has not contacted you, please use reach out.

Really wonderful place! My daughter loves coming to school, we started her when she was almost 2 and shortly after turning two my daughter is potty trained and not because the school wanted her to but because they have built up her confidence so much she is just thriving and growing from daily encouragement in anything she does. Her teachers have been amazing but all staff interact with all the children in a kind and respectful way. When I call the office to check on my daughter the front desk women know her and I by name and are more then happy to share stories about their encounters with my child
