The Oaks we carry may be from the Red Oak, or the White Oak Families. Almost anytime you are purchasing Oak from a large chain lumber store, it will be Eastern White or Red Oak. This isn't because Eastern Oak is superior, but because it is more commonly commercially harvested and milled into lumber due to profitability for the sawmill operator.
Cottonwood has been used for many things through the years including; shelving, framing, paneling, sub floors, crates, fruit boxes, pallets, lowboy decks, saddles, children's toys, and caskets. The higher quality cottonwood has been used in turning. You can surf the web at any time and find fine art and bowls that have been created from cottonwood burl, and burl cluster.
Both Coastal and Giant Sequoia Old growth redwood are extremely rot and decay resistant. Old growth material is more weather, bug, and rot resistant than second and third growth material. Both are very stable with little shrinkage or seasonal movement, and can be used interchangeably. It is a light weight softwood with good weight to strength ratio.
Doug Fir is very strong for its weight, and is also among the hardest and heaviest softwoods, for this reason it is frequently used in construction. Our Doug Fir lumber comes from right here in California and we can saw beams and timbers up to 45' long on our mill. We have old growth salvage DF in stock.
