The business was purchased in 1993 by the current owners, Bubba & Tom, who were employed at the garage before purchasing the business. They are here every day to ensure you are treated right and that your vehicle is repaired to your satisfaction.

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency regulates the type of refrigerant you can use in your air conditioner. Car batteries do not last as long in our warm Texas climate. Cold starts put a greater demand on batteries, but heat is a bigger factor in the life of a car's battery. We can test your car battery for how well it holds a charge and how much life it has left, and we will replace it if necessary.
Wheels are aligned with specific settings for toe-in & toe-out, positive & negative camber, & positive & negative castor. Each vehicle model can have different settings. Poor alignment affects your handling & causes your tires to wear very quickly. As with most things, belts & hoses wear out over time especially in our warm Texas climate leading to damage to other parts if not replaced when needed.
The Car Care Council has developed a service interval schedule to provide general guidelines for the regular maintenance of passenger cars, mini vans, pickups and SUVs. Intervals are built around an oil change every 3,000 miles, an accepted recommendation for the majority of motorists. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific recommendations by the car maker.
They may not look like much, but they are in my book the most trusted place for vehicle maintenance. I have NOT been any place else. A few days ago, while we were on vacation in Austin, the check engine light came on in our 2003 Camry. I found M E Gene Johnson Garage via Google Maps, called at 9 a.m., arrived at 9:20 and was on my way by 9:30!

Gene Johnson Garage is the best!!! I have been going here for my automotive needs for more than 20 years!!! Tommy and Bubba are absolutely two of the best guys!!!! I cannot say enough good things about this place... They are, in my opinion, the first place to go... They will take care of you and your vehicle.

This is the best auto shop in Austin. As a woman I’m always hesitant to take my car in for service by myself. I’m afraid I’m going to be scammed or taken advantage of because of my lack of car knowledge. The servicemen here are incredibly respectful and take their time explaining the repairs that are needed. Once, I brought my car in for service that ended up not being necessary, and they sent me home with no charge instead of performing the unneeded service to make the money. I always feel like me and my car are taken seriously when I come here and I appreciate that.

Recently I was able to get an inspection for my car to renew my registration. I am a happy repeat customer of M E Gene Johnson Garage for this service. They also offer auto repairs. I love that they have kept the retro gas station building in use without the gas part of retail, retaining the architecture and vintage Austin vibe. The staff are friendly, professional, fair and efficient. The location on Airport Boulevard is very convenient too.

Highly recommended! These dudes are honest and efficient. If they can't help you, or you could get it cheaper elsewhere (like a tire-related issue I once had), they'll tell you straight up. I have recommended them to at least 3 other people over the years, and they've been just as pleased as me. I can't sing their praises enough. The only reason I haven't been in lately is bc I bought a new car.

Love love LOVE this place!! Best mechanic ever. Referred here by two friends, and I can see why! When I did my first buyer's inspection, they were patient, helpful, and respectful with all of my questions even though it was painfully obvious that I knew nothing about cars at the time. After the inspection, they went through the results and cost of repairs with me, as well as discussing which ones were potential safety concerns and which were not. Very kind and honest people.
