A cozy little restaurant for tasty food without a long wait (I've eaten here before a movie and still made it on time for the show). I enjoy their oolong teapot tea served with every meal, and I love their variety of shrimp dishes like Sweet & Sour Shrimp and Salt & Pepper Shrimp with chili pods. It's great having so many tasty and spicy options on the menu. My father also enjoys their beef and noodle dishes. The one thing I'd critique is that you can't order the tea without ordering a meal.

If you don’t want MSGs added just tell them when you order and they can leave out of all items. I can definitely taste none. I feel like I can trust this restaurant and that means I’d come back.
No MSG makes the food a bit blander, but more natural , and better for me than the experience of MSGs where it plays with my satiety, I can’t stop eating, feel like I need to eat more food after I’ve eaten all the food, and just feel sick in my body after the whole experience.

Hunan Village is an institution on Grand Ave. They’ve been serving delicious, generously portioned Chinese food for decades and still manage to keep their quality up. We regularly order too much food and take it to-go to eat for days after. During the pandemic, takeout orders have been simple and made our Chinese food takeout dinners so much easier. Our typical dishes include: fish & broccoli, salt n pepper fish or tofu, braised tofu, sizzling rice soup, vegetarian pot stickers, shrimp fried rice or chow mein, crispy noodles, mushu pork, sautéed spinach, and sometimes honey walnut prawns. Definitely

I drive by here everyday and finally decided to try Hunan Village last night.
Pork Fried Rice - I was a little disappointed when I saw that the fried rice was white (usually means there not a flavor) but it was actually pretty good. There was flavor and I enjoyed the rice.
Pekk Chicken - I ordered this because of the reviews. I liked it. It reminded me of general tso chicken or sesame chicken (with out the sesame seeds), it was not too sweet.
Mongolian Beef - I also like this. There was not a ton of sauce but was okay. There was a lot of green onions and I liked that.
Wonton Soup - I tried

I have been coming to Hunan for the past 15 years and I have never been disappointed. The food is delicious and Ms. Chan is always so kind and welcoming. Hunan is definitely the only Chinese food restaurant that I will eat from. Movie night with my family is alway done with Hunan as the main course. I highly recommend coming here and trying a little bit of everything.

This place is great, especially for lunch. Where else can you get a complete lunch for $10, hot and fresh and cooked to order in like 10 minutes? It seems like just a bunch of honest hardworking people who have been making that food there for many years, and they do a good job of it too.
I'm partial to the orange chicken - nice and fresh and crispy, not like that steam-tray stuff you get at Panda Express. Get the lunch special. It's a great deal.

My family has been coming here over 30 years. My daughter ate their food as her first solid food and learned to use chopsticks here at 3 years old. Before Covid it was our neighborhood place to grab a bite. We are not fans of take out, but eating in, the food came out fast, hot and fresh. I have always found the prices reasonable so I don't know what some other people use for comparison. This is the best Chinese food in the area.

Oh dear. Where to begin.... well, let's define "Hunan".
Hunan cuisine, also known as Xiang cuisine, consists of the cuisines of the Xiang River region, Dongting Lake and western Hunan Province in China. It is one of the Eight Great Traditions of Chinese cuisine and is well known for its hot and spicy flavors, fresh aroma and deep colors. We'll come back to this definition a bit later.
We had kids who don't like spice so we ordered salt and pepper fish, the typical orange chicken and house chowmein. The fish was not bad - flavor ful and well prepared. However, the portion

Ordered here for the first time: honey walnut prawns and mu shu vegetables. Preparation was fast, as Chinese food usually is. The honey walnut prawns were nicely, lightly cooked, with a little too much of the mayonnaisey sauce, but a good quantity of walnuts. Disappointed to find that the mu shu came with Mexican flour tortillas, rather than the very thin traditional rice crepe. It was passable with this dish, but not as good. I would order here again but definitely skip the mu shu.

Spot on, delicious Chinese comfort food.
Some people in the reviews say that it's bland or lacks flavor. That's EXACTLY why I ordered from this place. I don't want to eat overly seasoned, overly salted food.
We got generals chicken (a MUST), house chow mein and fried rice, salt pepper fish, dumplings and szechuan wings. Not bland at all! Perfectly seasoned to my liking and not overly salted.
Love the hot sauce and hot oil they include.
Will be back for jjampong (spicy noodle soup) and many other dishes I need to try!
My NEW go to!

The pitfall of trying new places is sometimes I don't without the expectations. This little place in the Piedmont area of Oakland seemed like it would be a real find. Instead, I found them to have pretty mediocre Chinese food. They do it a lot of places do and substitute actual quality with lots of vegetables.
FOOD: The quality of the ingredients that were used in the dishes was actually very good. However the sauces were pretty bland and there were way too many vegetables given that these were both chicken dishes. The sizzling rice soup though was good and I enjoyed it.
SERVICE: no complaints

Been wanting to try Hunan Village for a long time and tonight I'm very glad I did.
Person taking my order over the phone was polite attentive and efficient. I was stuck in some traffic when I called from Emeryville and the timing of when the food was ready was pretty much spot on. I got there sooner than I thought though. The meals we ordered were freshly prepared and piping hot.
Pot stickers very tasty and noodle surrounding them was sweet and tender.
Vegetable chow mein was chock full of green vegetables and well prepared fried tofu.
Pens needed to sign receipt were marked sanitized

Replying to Justina K response: it wasn't about me being entertained it's simply called customer service and that's exactly what the lady at the front DID NOT HAVE and to top it off the food wasn't good at all. So again this review is not about entertained but the truth about the terrible customer service and terrible tasting food. Yes we all know the truth hurts sometimes word of advice do better. And FYI I would NEVER RETURN NOR RECOMMEND anyone here so yes your absolutely right I will take my business else where and it's nasty business owners like your that are closed

I've walked past this place for many-many years. I finally tried it last night. Its a dear friend birthday week and after having drinks, she chose this place to eat. It's her birthday week, so she picked and I pay. She's mentioned it before so, I assumed it's one of her favorite spot.
We arrived 15 minutes before closing. The kind lady -- who happens to own this restaurant and has been in the family since 1982 was very sweet. Ambiance is simple, clean and nice healthy plants. Jazz music is playing and made it relaxing.

Blown away by the amount of 5 star reviews. Read further and the trends amongst negative reviews are hard to miss. Some of them are echoed here.
Chow mein had 5 shrimp in it. 5 shrimp, no veggies and bland noodles---no thank you. Rip off.
General Tso's was literally all breading to the point where I was searching for an actual shred of meat between soggy pieces of breading that were all stuck together.
Really bummed and still hungry because I'm not about to eat sugar sauce soaked bread lumps and bland noodles.
Blah. $23.00 bill for a bunch of flour.

LUNCH SPECIALS HERE ARE WHAT YOU WANT!
This restaurant is spacious and pleasantly quiet (which is a great escape when you're caught up in the busy area around Grand Ave). The staff are helpful and sweet, and provide excellent customer service here. The food servings for the special is a great deal, especially since it includes your entree of choice, rice, soup, and fruits. If you plan on trying Hunan Village out, be sure to consider that parking is hard to come across in this area!
