Helio Gracie, the "father" of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) transformed traditional Jiu-Jitsu by modifying techniques that worked with his smaller and weaker stature. The core of Jiu-Jitsu is self-defense. Because leverage is the foundation of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, this martial art form is beneficial for everyone - children, women, men - including those with some forms of disabilities.
Children can begin learning foundations of jiu- jitsu as young as 3 years old; and the maximum age range is truly unlimited as the art is designed for weaker practitioners. Helio Gracie, the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu continued to practice jiu-jitsu until he passed away at 95 years old. Tomorrow we will have our 2nd monthly Women's Self-Defense class from 5:30-6:30 pm.

We love teaching Jiu-Jitsu to everyone - starting from 3 years old, up to as old as you can personally train. Training at Island Jiu-Jitsu means that you will learn all of the details to positions, regardless of your belt rank or experience. Everyone is supported and encouraged to perform at their best.
Island Jiu-Jitsu is proud to have different schools around the world representing our school and the Islands. These schools practice with Aloha and share the Island Jiu-Jitsu philosophy of No Politics, Gracious Teaching, and Team Unity. If you are traveling to any of these areas, you can be sure to find Aloha and mean trains in these dojos, as you would find in our main Honolulu dojo.
Children as young as 3 years old may participate based on their ability to attend to instruction. Mixed-level, Co-ed classes teaching self-defense and sport jiu-jitsu techniques. Mondays are Gi, Wednesdays are No Gi. Children may spar as long as they would like. Arrangements with other teammates should be made to ensure there is an adequate training partner for your child e.g.
Island Jiu-Jitsu is dedicated to teaching women how to defend themselves in real-life situations using Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques. These techniques are based on leverage - not how hard you can kick or punch someone. This class is focused on hands-on learning. This means that you will partner up with other students and instructors (male and female instructors are available) to physically practice each technique step-by-step.

Love this place so much! My son just started coming a little over a month ago, and we have seen so much improvement in such a short time! With that said, my son is 8 years old with sensory processing disorder and is blind in his left eye. I never would have thought he was capable of doing a sport, but his progress has been incredible! Coaches are all so patient and encouraging! He loves attending classes and is excited to continue learning.

This place rocks! Came to a couple morning fundamentals classes while in town visiting some family and had an awesome experience. Jason was really welcoming and made me feel like part of the crew immediately, he also taught some badass subs. Everyone in class was kind, respectful and aware, 10/10. I can't recommend this place enough.

I was in Oahu for work recently and hungry to get back to training. I checked out Island Jiu-Jitsu because of the yelp reviews and the feeling I got from the pictures. My gut said this was the right place.
I took several group classes and had the pleasure of a private session with Jason, the gym's owner.
His attention to the smallest details of a single technique, along with overall creative concepts are part of what makes the gym so special.
The other part is that everyone I met was friendly and welcoming. It feels like a large family. A family of absolute assassins on the mat. I tapped

This is the best place I have ever trained... period. The IJJ family is like no other and I'm so glad to be learning under Professor Jay. If you're looking for a top notch school that not only creates awesome practitioners but also goes over self defense, then this is the place for you. You can have the best athletes in the world teaching you, but unless they know how to relay that information and actually make sure your able to soak it in, its useless. Professor Jay not only knows his stuff but he knows how to relay the technique to you and make sure you know your stuff. I would try

If I lived here I would make this my school! These guys are down to earth and will teach you everything they know. I'm here for a few weeks traveling from NY, I've been training for about 2 years and wanted to stay connected to my practice because if I get out of my rhythm with training it's painful getting back in. Had a great class for $20 drop in which is nothing. I ran into a black belt from Renzo Gracie also traveling who had the same experience I did with the school. We hung out for an hour after class just talking which gave it that family vibe.

I am Coach J's first blue belt. I am damn proud to say I'm a part of the island jiu jitsu family. I haven't trained with the class for a while but still randomly take privates at his home. You can't put into words what it's like at island jiu jitsu. I can say it ain't easy but the group makes everything easy and fun. Like the other guy posted, Chris "Gracie" is hilarious and is easier to get along with than to look at. He crazy but he's awesome. There's a world champion mma fighter that frequents that place and all the seminars they bring in the

I spent last summer (3 months) in Honolulu working on a project and training with the IJJ team. Without Surfah/Professor J, Chris (Graaaccciiie), and the rest of the guys at IJJ my summer would've been pretty drab. Classes are always intense and exciting. I think it's the most island-style bjj training you can get in Honolulu. Hard to exactly describe this island style, but you'll know what I mean when you go check it out. It's fun, tiring, and spot on~Great people and friends on and off the mat!
