Services
We're passionate about keeping pets healthy and happy and giving them many years to spend with their owners. However, we also work hard to demonstrate our devotion to the health and well-being of animals through our Fear Free care methods and Cat Friendly certification. Additionally, our Animal Hospital in River North partners with area rescues to treat animals in need and help them find loving homes.
Our veterinarians are proud to serve River North and surrounding neighborhoods. They know that trust must be earned and that every pet is not just an individual, but a loyal, loving member of the family. With caring hearts and capable hands, our team works to build trusting relationships with all of our clients and be their pets' primary veterinarian.
Comprehensive care is the best care, and we always aim to be thorough when treating the pets of River North and surrounding neighborhoods. Spaying and neutering can keep pets healthy and prevent a number of issues, from unexpected pregnancies to certain cancers and infections. Your pet's bad breath is not just gross--it's a sign of poor health!
Calling all aspiring veterinarians, technicians, managers, receptionists and more! You are heartily encouraged to apply for positions at our new locations. We're excited to see Companion grow, and we need highly-motivated and passionate individuals like you to share in our vision and help us deliver outstanding service and quality medicine to our communities!
Our feline friends receive far less veterinary care than they should. Cats are masters of concealment and will do everything they can to hide their illness and discomfort-but don't be fooled! While cats are generally viewed as independent and low-maintenance, they still need regular health checkups and preventative care to stay healthy.

If I had listened to the first vet here my cat would have died. We got switched to another vet when I insisted on bringing my cat back to be seen. Then, two times in a row I was sent home with half of the medication that was prescribed and I PAID FOR. It was only because I looked at discharge instructions and emails that my cat got the medication she was supposed to get. I was promised management would call after the second time in a row I had to return here after just leaving. Guess who I never heard from? Management. Once my cat has her follow up from the vet that actually helped her, I’m done

This is the second time i brought him here for the grooming service. The first time was really great, not sure what happened this time. The hair behind his back legs were very long and they needed to be trimmed, he came home with one side longer than the other, like it was not professionally done!

Came here to do a check-up for my Roborovski Hamster after we got him. The exotics vet, Dr. Archer, was very gentle when handling him and she was super knowledgeable and gave us amazing information, tips, and recommendations. Plus, when we first walked in to the hospital we received a very warm welcome from the staff and we were so surprised! They were so excited to have a hamster patient :)

I absolutely love it here. I had a previous vet in the city before moving closer to Companion and decided to try it out when my cat had an ulcer in her lip. Super informative vet, tech was so nice, they handle the animals just like you would as the owner and they know what they're doing. It's honestly such a relief since my cat has horrible anxiety and it's hard on both of us to take her to the vet. They only do what's necessary and I just really adore all the people there. Every time I've gone I've left feeling great about my cats care. Thank you Companion!

The people at companion animal hospital are very kind! My puppy is always actually happy to be there and they’re all so sweet to her even when she’s acting a little nutty.
They’re fine as long as you remember that they are a business first!
They will try to sell you something extra nearly every trip. Whether it’s $200 worth of medication for a minor bacterial infection (which I later looked into online and realized I made a huge mistake buying alllll of that stuff from them) or a follow up appointment where they will literally look at your dog for two minutes and then slap you with a

I've taken my cat here a few times for sedated grooming. The first 2 times went well with no issues besides the total cost being ridiculously expensive. This last time, there were complications with the medications they gave to sedate my cat. He had difficulty breathing with the first sedation medication so they reversed it and gave him the second medication which didn't work at all. They then asked if they could give him the 3rd medication which is not reversible so I said no. I picked him up and was thinking the staff would be considerate and sympathetic for us, but no, they made us pay $350

I am totally happy with Companion RN! They even helped me and my pup when we were forced into a bad position by my previous vet. They are professional, courteous, clean and act in all ways as though they care for your animal. Because they do. They treated my dog for an infected bite wound and he’s well on his way back to being 100%.

I first became aware of Companion by volunteering for a local animal shelter and began taking my own pets there when their vet left the clinic I had previously taken them too.
They are so kind, informative and genuinely care about your pet’s well being. They make unfortunate and horrible situations better with their compassion.
Some people may say they’re expensive but I believe you get what you pay for.

One star for the doctor who was the only one that seemed to have it together. I regret the day I took my cat here. They dropped the ball CONSTANTLY. Every time I called I felt like I was bothering them. I had to beg for an appointment to get a hygiene groom from a tech after antibiotics caused diarrhea for my cat. She had a wound that I, the pet owner, had to come up with ways that she wouldn't keep getting at. Not what I paid hundreds of dollars for. I went there for good well-rounded care and I got the exact opposite of that. I will say they generously waived a fee that I had to ask to be

My dog Bailey has been going to companion r north for years and we have been overall pretty happy with some issues here and there where I felt like they were forcing unnecessary treatment on her to jack up the bill.
Yesterday, I called because she had been throwing up a lot for about 24 hours and I felt okay not seeing a vet because she was acting normal other than the vomiting and diarrhea but wanted to get her some prescription food and probiotics that have helped her recover before. The receptionist said it shouldn't be an issue and a vet tech would call and let me know when they were

Companion Animal Hospital is the best! The care given to my dog is unparalleled to any other. The staff, techs and veterinarians are all very friendly, professional, and treat my dog like their own. They even follow up on appointments to make sure my dog is doing well. They explain everything in detail so I fully understand what is going on with my dog, and always answer any questions I have. I have not found it difficult to make an appointment in a timely manner, and they even offer curbside appointments. I would recommend Companion Animal Hospital to anyone with a pet! My son brought our 8 yo golden retriever in to be updated on core vaccines ie rabies ($85.12 + $18 for metal tag). We were told an exam was required ($76.40). No problem. Distemper vax ($88.43) and oral Bordatella ($38.89). Medical waste fee to throw away needles etc (medical waste disposal $12.60). The final bill was $723.88!!! Turns out they did a full CBC, urinalysis, and heart worm screening - on a healthy dog that takes Heartguard preventative monthly! Also charged us for a prepaid fecal container that we did not receive and do not want. I expect this type of upsell and inflated billing

I live in the neighborhood and wanted to try Companion animal hospital for our new puppy.
This review is focused on the unethical business practices and invoices.
After the visit which included the technician and doctor I expected to proceed back to reception and receive and itemized printout of all the services and then pay for it.
Instead I was kept in the examination room with my shaking dog who wanted to go home. The technician did NOT provide the printout or even go over what I am paying for. Just simply said today's visit is $250. I wanted to get my dog home as soon as possible and

I gave it the star because the receptionists are super nice. Other than that not many things to recommend it. Our vet tech was super new & very unsure. Not a bad thing as we all have to learn somewhere. Nice kid. Our problem was the actual vet. She didn't seem super concerned about our 2 kittens respiratory problems as she did about going through a bunch of unnecessary tests that had been done previous to our adoption of the kittens. When she saw I was not going to budge on the unnecessary testing she swiftly back pedaled. Red flag #1.
Then she commented on how chubby the 1 kitten was

I love companion!!! I recently moved to Chicago and wasn’t sure where to take my puppy, but followed the other positive Google reviews. I’m so glad I did! The vets and vet techs are great. They’re very thorough and upfront about testing if your pet gets sick. Every staff member I’ve spoken with over the phone or at the front desk has been wonderful and so compassionate. But what’s made my experience with them the best is my experience with dog trainer extraordinaire, Charmaine. Charmaine works as a team with the vets to provide holistic and thorough training. After my move, my puppy was

Took my cat here because he seemed to have a cold (runny eyes, congested, lethargic). I called around to a lot of places and this was the only place able to get me in the next day. Showed up and was immediately in a room, got in and out in around 30 min. Dr. Melin was great. I always get nervous I'll get shamed (our cat is a little overweight, behind on a vaccine) but she was very kind and helpful. Price was reasonable for visit/meds. Will definitely be going back. Parking is a bit hard but was able to find a spot right in front.

I don't want to go into specifics but we had a perfectly healthy 6 month old baby bunny go in for a routine neutering and he didn't make it out alive. He had zero issues nor any pre-existing conditions and from the research we did beforehand it was over a 99% success rate- including bunnies with pre-existing issues.

I called and made an appointment with Dr Archer. She was very reasonable. She gave options to assist with my baby's GI issues. She didn't try to upsell everything and the bathroom sink like some vets will do. She didn't even make me feel bad about me being the potential culprit of my dog being sick (chicken nuggets and table food ). They did a follow up to see how he was doing and my baby was back to normal in 3-4 days. I was recommended this place by a lady I met at the park and was happy we came since we are new to Chicago. I would highly recommend.

Companion River North is the absolute best vet. I am so grateful my pup, Darla, is taken care of by Dr. Schnitker and Dr. Archer. As soon as we approach and she knows where we are headed, her eyes light up with excitement and joy to be there. It is the sweetest reaction. I can tell Darla feels safe and taken care of at Companion. Both vets are incredibly caring, warm, and intelligent. Your pet will be in highly capable hands by anyone they see there. We also found an incredible dog trainer, Charmaine, through this vet. So thankful.
