Heidelberg
The Heidelberg Restaurant has been serving fine German food since 1961, but is much more than a German restaurant - it's actually three floors of dining, drinking, dancing, and entertainment!

On the main floor is the Heidelberg "Alpine Dining Room", upstairs is Club Above, with DJ's, live music, and dancing (also available for private events!), and downstairs is the Rathskeller, where you can meet friends for your favorite libation and a bite to eat in a classic rathskeller setting. We've added some Neue Deutsche (New German) dishes to the traditional German fare we've served since 1961!
Services
When someone says "The Heidelberg", they may be thinking of very different things. That's because the Heidelberg has three floors, offering a very different experience on each! Upstairs is Club Above, and downstairs is the Rathskeller. But the main floor - whether you call it "The Alpine Dining Room" or "The Heidelberg" - is where you'll find the establishment that has been serving fine German food in Ann Arbor since 1961.
This year we re-opened the Club Above, offering live music, DJ's, and interactive entertainment several nights a week. Fully remodeled, with a new sound system and new dance floor, Club Above re-joins the local scene with a fresh vibe and fresh eye on providing an alternative to Ann Arbor's surprisingly limited number of downtown places to dance and drink.
Downstairs from the Heidelberg Alpine Dining Room, you'll find the Rathskeller, a favorite Ann Arbor watering hole that remains something of a reasonably-well-known "best-kept secret". A classic rathskeller setting with its bricked-arch ceiling, stained-glass windows, casual beer-hall tables, roomy booths, dart boards, giant jenga, and so much more!
We now use tablet menus provided by Menuvative. Get a visual preview of the dishes, and help selecting the perfect wine or beer to match your selection! We re-modeled and re-opened Club Above this year, and offer dancing with DJ's and live music several nights every week. Ask us about booking the space!
Our new management team is looking for energetic, positive, hardworking people to build the best crew we can build. Are you a team player who can blend professionalism and an upbeat attitude while you serve? Do you have a passion for food, and a passion for giving your guests the best experience possible day after day?

Was driving down the street and saw the sign and decided to stop in for a drink. I love a good German bar/restaurant. The decor is good. We had already eaten, but looked over the menu - disappointing. There were German dishes, but some things were not authentic. Didn't entice me to want to eat there. I ordered a glass of wine. At $12 a glass, I expected better.
The bartender was busy taking selfies. She would have been perfect in a college bar, not what I expected here.

Ann Arbor's Latin Dance community held a Dance Social at Club Above on second floor of Heidelberg. Best dance party I've attended in AA. Great atmosphere, energetic crowd, fantastic music!

Awesome house breaded chicken tenders! burger was okay. there was one guy bartending, taking food orders, and running food out. I felt really bad for him. we had to wait quite awhile to order. I'm sure it's because they're short staffed. just hard to watch.

I can't say enough about the place. The German food is great. The beer selection fits what I expected and the staff was amazing. A little off the main drag in A2 but worth the walk.

This review is NOT about the venue. Its about the bartender NIKKI. 5 foot, ball pigtails, skinny. I waited until the next day day to see if I felt the same. Worst server I've experienced in a long time. I don't do this often but I've been frequenting this bar for about 15 years. I arrived here with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time to have a couple of beers. He bought two and I bought four (bought one for him). Three each, six total. Capped it off with a well shot. She cashed him out and charged me for all six beers! And tried to charge me for a missing stein! I asked why my bill was $94 for

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. TERRIBLE SERVICE, BEER SELECTION, AND FOOD.
It took >30 min to get 1L of beer, which had only HALF of the posted selection available. Understandable when there's only two folks manning the bar, but not when there's only one person trying to order.
Food was delivered to the wrong table - the folks sitting there had to deliver it to ours themselves even though they told the wait staff that they hadn't ordered food.
The only white bartender dude, who had been consistently drinking & inebriated the entire time, conveniently forgot to acknowledge the returned glassware DESPITE

The gym functions as a place to wear tight pants. An elevator on the 3rd floor goes sideways. Tacos serve no purpose here. If you dig a hole in your ceiling management gets very angry. They sometimes can't take a joke. But, sometimes I think the ceiling is the seat on my toilet bowl. This is usually on weekends. The beer is very good. TOO GOOD. Please make it less good. I COMMAND YOU!

We got a Thunder Bird with German potato salad. The food was wonderful! The service was very polite and wonderful, considering there was only 2 people working the front. One serving, one bar tending and taking orders! The place has been there since 1961, and it shows. Could use some touching up and was out of cider beer and Sprite when we visited. But the food and the 2 people working so hard makes it a place to revisit!

This was by far one of the worst restaurants and bars I have ever frequented. We were really excited to try some German fare and didn't bother looking at reviews. First, we walked into a deserted place with tables stacked - this should have been our first red flag. The beer we wanted was not available and we were told that the online menu (there was no physical copy) was outdated. We then made the second huge mistake of ordering food. We both wanted Jager Schnitzel. The Copenhagen sauce was "out." The only option was the "creamy mushroom." We have had a lot of amazing German

I was very un happy with the service,
The food looked really good, although it seems the service was ignoring tables to avoid serving food.

Severely Understaffed...

The bartender did a great job of taking care of our table on the front sidewalk. Speedy and friendly service and good food. I've been coming to this restaurant for over 40 years and am still a happy customer.

Absolutely phenomenal.
My boyfriend and I are vacationing in Ann Arbor for a week and decided to try out this restaurant. Our server, Ben, was not only incredibly kind and charming, but informed on the food, drinks, and but local area as well. He and other staff were very much so understanding of the covid situation, and was actually able to provide substantial information as to the differing mandates in our state. Our food came out hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious. We plan on visiting again during our short stay here, and encourage others to stop by and show some love!

Sad day in AA. What had been a favorite go to for excellent food is now a mere shadow of itself. Should have known when the bartender came over and plopped a tablet on the table. Wait that's not even the menu. You order online. No waiter. And I asked him what beers were on happy hour special. He said that ended at 7. But the sign outside says 4-10! When we asked him about the changed menu he said it's been like that as long as he's worked there. We said it's been a few months since we were there. "How long have you worked here?" "Two weeks".

Gone are the days of old
The decor remains but little else of this older Ann Arbor staple. You will be guaranteed some German beer on tap, but there are better places to go for that. The menu is now extremely limited, only 3 German entrees...additionally the portions seemed halved but the cost the same. The quality has diminished as well. The new electronic menu system with no actual waiter seems to result in a backed up kitchen and long wait. I miss the old Heidelberg. Seek Metzgers if you wish some true German food and hospitality. The basement at Heidelberg will suit you just fine if you only

Don't go here. Ever. We used to love it. Last time -- almost everything German removed from menu. 40 minute wait for food. Schnitzel inedible. Lukewarm. Food served on paper plates. Just awful.

I'm highly sad to what happened to this place. The German dishes almost disappeared, the beer is not well presented and the food is served in an bambu steamer. The food is ok but not nearly as good as from the old menu.
My previous review and experience:
Love it. The food is pretty good. Must try the German plates.
They have German beer on draft!!
Highly recommended

The Heidelberg would be just another bar if not for a personable bartender named Tony. He consistently greets every customer that comes up to the bar and every customer that walks through the door during non-peak hours. He introduced me to an old-fashioned with ginger (which I have never had before) which is delicious. I have been to this bar twice and plan to come back for this drink.
Tony has a comedy show going on Tuesday nights in the room above the bar.

The Heidelberg is hit and miss with it's service. Some days you can get in and out within 45 minutes to an hour. Other days it takes your 45 minutes to see a server downstairs and by then you're ready to leave.

On the good days though, the reubens are some of the best in town and who doesn't want DAS BOOOOT!!?

The bartenders are super friendly and nice. However, the basement is absolutely disgusting. It reeks of mold and body odor. Also got a cut on my finger because the wood on the tables isn't properly sanded.

Spent our Thanksgiving here with the restaurant's dining manager. :)

Beautiful old architecture, wood, artwork, and German pub vibe. Very friendly and chatty staff. On busier nights I'd imagine the place is hopping (with the upstairs dance floor!).

My wife and I each tried a 1 liter "boot" (literally a glass boot) from their draft selection. Fun time.

This place was perfect for my birthday dinner :) I visited this establishment with my husband and mom. We came here on a Monday evening, and we were the only table on the first floor.( there was an event going on upstairs, so I'm sure that's why. It definitely was not empty because of the food) The food was delicious! The menus are tablets, and you can see pictures of the menu items. For our appetizers, we ordered the mozzarella sticks, fried pickle spears and the KAESESPAETZLE, which are
German dumplings tossed with roasted onions and garlic, topped with a creamy cheese sauce. The KAESESPAETZLE

Insert wurst joke here.
Sorry, I've always wanted to make the wurst pun!
Hopefully this will not be the wurst review.

Anyways, I don't know why The Heidelberg has a mixed bag of Yelp ratings, because I think of it as a charming establishment, providing a taste of Germany and epic beer boots in an escapade from the otherwise tame daily life of Ann Arbor. Although it's not quite upscale enough for a classy dinner or hip enough to become famous on Instagram, it's definitely on the ranks of staples for food and drinks.

We came for Restaurant Week, and they had an amazing deal

The Heidelberg is an institution. Like most it probably is a bit in need of some invigorating, but if you're looking for traditional German food in a traditional setting you would be well served to visit the Heidelberg.

Family ordered from the handy tablet-based menu which was great. Helped my teenagers feel comfortable with what they were getting since they could review ingredients and pictures of each dish.

I got the Wiener schnitzel with jaeger sauce and spaetzle. It was just like I remember from living in Germany and I inhaled it. Everyone else enjoyed their meal as well.

This review is of the German restaurant on the main floor.

We went for dinner on a Thursday night and we were the only people in the restaurant which meant that service was a bit slow since the kitchen wasn't running at full speed.

We had the Rouladen which came with two side dishes. We ordered the fried potatoes and the red cabbage and a side order of the Käsespätzle. The Rouladen had nice flavor but they were a bit dry and over cooked. On the other hand, all three side dishes were very good and better than our side dishes at Metzger's. Our dinner companion ordered the Wiener Schnitzel
