Services
Salem Veterinary Hospital provides a safe, friendly kennel environment where your pet can spend time relaxing while you are away. We offer climate controlled canine boarding, feline boarding, and day boarding. Our devoted and loving staff provide gentle, compassionate interaction. We provide regular walks for fresh air, potty breaks, and playtime when appropriate.
Preventable disease is on the rise since 2006, there has been a 36% increase in canine diabetes and a 16% increase in feline diabetes. Heartworm disease, dental disease and the diseases associated with fleas and ticks are also increasing in prevalence. Routine preventive care visits are the best way to stay on top of good health and to catch underlying illnesses as early as possible.
How often should my pet have a physical examination? This usually depends on your pet's age. The goal here is to maintain good health. As a puppy or kitten, wellness exams are recommended on a monthly basis, while for the average adult, annual wellness examinations are the norm, and for middle aged or geriatric pets, semi-annual examinations are recommended.
On the first veterinary visit: We recommend puppies and kittens have fecal screenings to find and eliminate harmful parasites and protozoa that may have been passed down from mom or picked up from the environment.
During annual wellness exams: This is recommended along with a thorough physical examination because dog blood work, along with other bodily fluids like urine, can help identify conditions the physical exam portion of an appointment cannot. Also, a healthy baseline is a good comparison to have when we your pet isn't feeling well.

Out of all the members of one's family, the chances are it will not be difficult to guess who has the worst dental hygiene: the pets. They do not brush their teeth nor do they floss and this goes on for years.
If you are ever curious as to what happens if teeth go for years without brushing (or you want to show your children what will become of their teeth should they fail to brush regularly), you have only to look at your pet's teeth and smell your pet's breath.Plaque can be easily wiped off. Calculus or Tartar is plaque that has absorbed calcium from the saliva and become calcified.

Dr. Sheffield and her staff have been fantastic for the five plus years they have cared for our two dogs. She's not only an expert in her field but also spends the time necessary to make sure one fully understands the needs and options for the best care of one's pets. We could not be happier with our experience at Salem Veternary Clinic (Hospital).

I would not recommend bringing your dogs here as the lines of communication between the front desk, doctors, and techs are terrible.
They will tell you they have everything under control and then charge you 2x’s what other vets in the area charge.
After ending our relationship with them, they sent over a falsified record for us to give to our new vet (which just seems a bit petty).
They also refused to answer emails and calls for those records after I expressed wanting to my relationship with them.
Go elsewhere. Falsifying records alone is an issue you should be worried about.

For years I brought my beloved English Bulldog, Haus. Dr. Hundley took great care of him and is super friendly and great with people.
The gals inside are sweet and all obviously love animals.
When Haus developed cancer and had to be put down, they were so compassionate and Dr. Hundley even cried with me when I held him and they injected him. I'll never forget that she cried with me during that time.
My ex got another English Bulldog and Salem Vet has been taking good care of him for the last 4 years now.
They can typically squeeze you in for an emergency within a day or two.

I have followed Dr. Hundley from her previous clinic to Salem. I pass 3 vets to see her and the staff at Salem Veterinary Hospital. She has become a part of our family and knows our dogs by name but also remembers what their last visit was for and their history.
Everyone there is compassionate, loving and respectful (along with a great sense of humor). I wont take my babies anywhere else.

The night prior I found this Vet on Google and it was one of the best Vets in the area based on the reviews, as I am new to the area. When I went to their website I was even more impressed that you could drop your pet off on certain days, how convenient! I decided to mosey in to drop my baby off only to find out; "We are booked today. I know our website says that and we are working on getting that updated, sorry." How disappointing! If your website says one thing you should stick to that until you get it updated.

Small business change personality every couple years. Salem fell out of favor for not listening to me. Dr Sheffield has always been good and a favorite, but I have been unable to see her last few times there, seeing someone else.
Staff perceived as dont listen to me seeking profit first. Cat ernie didnt like vet tech last time which is unusual. He loves all. Made me wonder how he was treated when out of my sight with tech.
Constantly wanting unnecessary and expensive work done against my wishes and refuse to listen to me. Held me hostage to repeat visits to refill Rx instead of providing more

I take all three of my dogs here and never have any problems with any of the staff. However, I will caution everyone to be careful about extra expenses. They will recommend a lot of services that are not completely necessary and their prices are definitely not the cheapest. A regular checkup with basic shots always costs me over $250, not including heat worm meds. A little steep in my opinion, but the location is what keeps me coming back.

Been using this vet (and all it's various Dr.s) for over 20 years. In all that time I have not had a bad experience. They do recommend services beyond what you're there for today, but just like human check-ups and their tests, it's all to be sure your fur baby lives as healthy as possible. That being said, you are under no obligation to pursue those services. It's great to know that your vet also kennels, just in case. Our babies lived a long and healthy life under their care until age related illness took them away. I have had to help two of my babies over the rainbow

My fiancé Melissa brings her "furry girl" here (whom I am convinced she loves more than me), so when I was in need of a new vet I brought her in today for a nail trim. They took great care of her, found an abrasion on her leg and trimmed around and cleaned it up at no extra charge, but did so with gray care and compassion for my girl who does not like her feet touched at all (hence the vet for a nail trim). Got to spend a few minutes talking to the doctor and and just observing the staff. I am a manager at a large medical practice and we offer great care to our patients, my puppy got

Location location location...
This is conveniently located for us. We've had very good service by friendly staff with each visit.
On a cautionary note, be aware you may well be recommended excess services. The staff was fairly straight forward in identifying the "nice to have" items but listen carefully or else your bill will be very high.
Ask about refunds as well. Doing so got us a $10 rebate for the heart worm pills.

I was looking for a vet because the two other places I was at did not meet my standards after a few incidents that happened and they were not accommodating. Salem Veterinary Hospital is in my neighborhood but I needed to do research before I decided to use them (this was in November 2014). I sat out in the parking lot a few days and approached customers who were going in or out of the office to ask why they chose Salem Veterinary Hospital. I walked in myself (without my dog) and asked questions. Since it was the first visit my greyhound was going for his annual checkup, I figured I would try

I had been taking my two doggies to Salem for a year and loved the staff and the service was good. Then last Friday I brought them in for boosters and a new vet was there whom I have never met before. She was so incredibly disrespectful to me trying to lecture me about not getting all of the shots my pups needed and looking over at the assistant and rolled her eyes and said this is going to be a long appointment. I was trying to explain that I receive post cards in the mail from them with reminders and I had gotten one last month that I got two more different reminders for separate immunizations

Worst vet experience ever. Nice people but completely took advantage of us- we brought our sick dog here who had kennel cough and left with a $480 bill just for a 30 minute exam and some meds. None of which I assure you should have totalled anywhere near that. I asked other vet friends and they said half of what they charged would have been reasonable and they couldn't believe it. I wrote them an extensive complaint and never received a reply or even the slightest concern. We live less than a mile away and I now drive over an hour to our old vet in Elizabeth city just to see someone with

Although I think this place has the potential to be a great vet hospital, they should really get a new main doctor. My husband and I had a very bad experience here.
After 2 years of constant vet visits at another clinic, trying to save our 17 year old cat, we finally made the very painful decision to put her down. She was sleeping all day, except to eat and when she did get up she was in pain, walking very stiffly and moaning. Many times she would cry out in pain. She wouldn't use the cat box anymore and she seemed so sad and in pain all the time.

This was yet another first for us so didn't know what to expect but everyone was extremely informational which is a good thing. Benji loved everyone their as well.
The first visit was free with a price run down for all the vaccinations the were recommended.
We have an appointment next week so we are definitely going back.

I have been taking both of our cats to Salem Veterinary Hospital for 10 years and they are absolutely wonderful.
They are always professional, friendly and work with my budget.
Our cat, Blackie, has some medical issues with IBS and Salem Vet has helped with medicine and she is getting better.
Our cat, Silver, was sick (she was 15 years old) and they did everything they could to find a cure for her after multiple tests, but her Kidneys were failing and unfortunately, we had to help her cross the "rainbow bridge". The hardest decision to ever make, but she was failing and lost so
