The history of Noblesville goes back to 1818, when the government bought land from Native Americans living in the are, which is now known as Hamilton County. The earliest European settler was William Conner, who established a trading post in central Indiana in 1802. In 1823, Conner and Josiah Polk laid out the area that became downtown Noblesville.
The original name of this region was Mudsock. The name was changed to Fisher's Switch in 1872 when Salathiel Fisher divided the land into town lots. In 1908, the residents of the area shortened the name to Fishers. Since the town was located near a railroad, it attracted many new residents and businesses.
Until the 1800s, the area now known as Carmel went by the name Bethlehem. It was originally inhabited by the Delaware Indians. The Town of Bethlehem was laid out by John Felps, Seth Green, Alexander Mills and Daniel Warren in April of 1837. The name was changed to "Carmel, " after the Biblical mountain in 1856 and Carmel was officially incorporated in 1874.
