Umeya Restaurant
The Umeya Corp. started out in 1991 as a home delivery service. It began with delivering quality food to Japanese restaurants, homes and catering parties. They made prepared food for restaurants to serve, as well as daily food for families. After the success of this business Mr. and Mrs. Umeda started Umeya Sushi Bar and Japanese Gourmet Restaurant.

In 1996 they opened the doors of Umeya Restaurant. After 25 years of operation Umeya still serves the best quality Japanese cuisine to its customers.

NEW OWNERSHIP. The family that has owned Umeya for what seems like forever now has recently sold the restaurant. I am all for giving new places and people a fresh fair chance and did just that. Unfortunately, the new ownership has taken this once local gem in the opposite direction. Fish, like the tuna, is no longer that beautiful color accustomed to a high end sushi spot that takes pride in their fish. It is now that odd neon pink color that comes with poor freezing techniques on low quality tuna. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I plan on revisiting Umeya later and seeing if things

Friendly family business. They remember you if you're a regular. Their sashimi is amazing - incredibly fresh and silky like butter! Their sashimi / sushi combos are definitely good value for what you get!

Very good sushi! It was so good that we ordered 2 days in a row. The rice with chicken was my favourite meal.

Ordered take out during covid - the only option they offer. Phone calls can be made after 2:00p, but I couldn't get a hold of someone until closer to 2:30p.

Even for take out, their sushi continues to be of epic quality, and small quantity. It's a quality over quantity type of place, and when it comes to sushi quality wins.

Absolutely without a doubt, plan on getting the sushi omekase. The quality of the sushi is beyond anything that they will offer in their regular sushi and sashimi entrees, which admittedly I order with the omekase since the portions are small.

The food is good but the attitude of the owners and staff is terrible. It is very expensive and you would think that you might get a smile once in a while for those prices. And, they don't always wear masks. Won't be returning.

Been going here for years and always loved this place.
Fresh sushi. A local favorite.

Occasionally is closed on the most inconvenient times though. Will not stop me from continually going.

Freshest sushi around! If you live in the area... go and see for yourself. I have been going there for over 10 years, and never disappointed... Service is ok.. not great... but worth the sushi.. Miss the byob ! They now have a liquor license. Can add a lot to your bill if drinking.. Not a cheap dinner, but worth saving for..
Not fancy, not elegant, but dark and relaxing... Can be romantic, if you sit in the back.. but be prepared for very very slow poor service.

The service was really slow took 15 min to get our drinks. Some wrong pieces came out and even though our entire Bill was almost $400, they wouldn't take the wrong pieces off the tab. I've come here a lot and thought they could have at least thrown in a small appetizer or piece.

I also came here on my birthday and my kids snuck off to ask the waitress to bring out the ice cream with a candle and to sing to me. The waitress laughed at them and just brought over the check.

It's good, but I'm going to go somewhere where the service is better.

Fresh & authentic. An OG sushi gem in the heart of Bergen county. My family has been coming here for 10 years and it's the best sushi in the area. Always quality and we look forward to eating here each time. Highly recommend for those who appreciate a delicious sushi experience.

Terrible terrible service. waitresses were very rude. When i pay and leave, they did not even care about me. They didnt say bye.

when I ordered wagyu sushi they said it takes time so i understand takes some times. but it was too long. more than 20min almost 30min for just 2 pieces of wagyu. i think it was frozen beef. Also the wagyu price was $14. Totally overpriced ( and of course it was not delicious)
We spend about $200 but Only the uni was amazing. That 1 star is for uni.

I will not go back again!

Solid neighborhood sushi restaurant owned by a friendly Japanese couple. I've been there about a dozen times and have always come away satisfied. The menu is extensive and the sushi quality is above average. It's a small place and does get crowded on the weekends. So be sure to make reservations ahead of time.

The one negative is that service could be pretty slow on a crowded night. My sense is that they are understaffed, especially on nights when the restaurant is packed.

Best sushi, hands down. Melt in your mouth goodness. Everything I had was awesome, not a single good sadness. The service is a little slow, but it makes for a longer dinner.
