Couples who experience serious and often gridlocked problems generally wait too long to seek help and their problems become entrenched. They feel abandoned and rejected and don't feel listened to when they try to express their pain. Their fights may become unpleasant or they may avoid each other altogether.
Marital and Couples Counseling with Dr. Kovner is based on 30 years of research on what happily married couples do right. Couples come to therapy in the "attack-defend" mode and cannot manage their negativity. They fight over differences that may have once attracted them to each other. We find that opposites do attract.
Before you agree to begin marriage counseling, find out what the strengths are of the relationship and the areas that need improvement. First, come in and discuss your perceptions of your marital problems. Fill out the assessment questionnaires. Then, get feedback. Couples assessment guides the treatment intervention just as a blood test tells the physician which medication to use.
An Important event (like the birth of a child, job loss, changes in job or residence, an illness, the death of a loved one) has occurred in our lives. Major issues about children have arisen (this could be about whether or not to have a child). Being attracted to other people, feeling jealous, or a spouse is flirtatious, or there may be a recent extramarital affair.
Psychological testing provides you with a way of defining and measuring a specific clinical concept such as intelligence, ADHD or depression. It tells the clinician what it is they are giving a clinical label to based on the way an individual responds to a specific set of questions or tasks at their age at the time they are tested.
