I have been practicing for over 20 years. Overall, I use an insight-oriented and holistic approach to psychotherapy. I work extensively with helping people recover from traumatic injury, both combat trauma and traumatic abuse. I also specialize in work with creative and artistic individuals and have, for many years, taught as an adjunct faculty at UNC-W in creative writing.
Dr. Ibsen completed her undergraduate work at Western Washington State College in 1969 and her graduate work at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1975. She began her private practice in Wilmington in 1981 after teaching for six years. This nearly 4-year adventure sabbatical coupled with growing up in Alaska has provided a unique cross-cultural sensitivity that has influenced her practice philosophy.
I am proud to be a professional mental health counselor and would be pleased to serve you in that capacity. I work with late adolescents and adults in individual, couples and family therapy. I focus on problems related to anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, adjustment reactions, grief, sexual concerns, and general stresses and concerns of living.
I moved to the Wilmington area in the summer of 2017 to start a private practice. Prior to starting my practice, I was on staff at Appalachian State University as a psychologist working with the student population. I enjoyed my work at the university, but I love the coast, so I decided to make the move to Wilmington with my family.

Absolutely horrible experience... waited over 3 weeks for appointment, rearranged work schedules to make it... really big deal because it was for a marriage counseling appointment and it's been an emotional time so the appointment was really important. We got there and the therapist comes out to ask if we want to do virtual counseling which he admitted he already knew we didn't want that...so as were at his office for the appointment we've been waiting for, he tells us that he can't do the counseling session because we aren't vaccinated! At no time EVER did anyone let us know that would happen

I've been attending this facility for just over a year. This is my first experience with a phycologist and I have been very pleased with the results. I feel as if I am talking with a friend and am able to share many uplifting and dark secrets with my counselor without fear of being judged. I would suggest their services for anyone seeking assistance with emotions, anxiety or any other behavioral issues. You will be happy you did.
