A group of concerned health care professionals advocated for a specialized gender clinic in response to the disproportionately high rates of HIV/AIDS impacting transgender (TG) women in San Francisco. It was known that trans-identified people typically had negative experiences seeking healthcare, if they could access it at all.
New patients: To become a new patient you need to drop in on a Tuesday at 2pm. You will be seen by a nurse or a social worker. You will be asked about special needs such as HIV status, health conditions, and other issues related to mental health, substance abuse, and risk factors. The purpose of this is to help us better address your particular needs.
Tuesday afternoons, 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Our intake process is still in the works but please call the TG voicemail line at 415-355-7588. The Tom Waddell Urban Health Clinic is located at 230 Golden Gate at Leavenworth Street in the Tenderloin Neighborhood. It is approximately 2 blocks from the Civic Center BART Station and 2 blocks from the 7th and Market Muni.
Patients with appointments: As much as possible, we try to see you at your scheduled appointment time; however, because we deal with a complexity of issues, we cannot always predict the time it will take with a particular need. We ask for your understanding and patience. Patients without appointments (drop-ins): All drop-in patients are triaged by the nurse.
