O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is one of the oldest Mortuary businesses in the city's East End section of Newport News. In the Spring of 1933, Otis H. Smith, Sr. started the business. A tiny mark on the face of time and that moment became the birth of an entity, O. H. Smith Funeral Home. In the year 1932, many things tried to deter Otis H. Smith, Sr. from entering the funeral profession.
Despite the odds with the help of his father, he began the business that operated from the two story framed house on Chestnut Avenue. As the years passed, the adjoining houses on both sides were purchased and became a part of the business facility. At that time the family operated business included his late wife, Willie Smith and their late daughter, Jean Grimes, all licensed funeral directors.

Most of us plan ahead in life. We plan for our wedding, our children's education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.
Many who have undergone the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of losing a loved one have made the choice to pre-plan their own funeral. Doing so lifts the burden from their loved ones by relieving decision-making pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress. Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice.
Most of us are not prepared to plan and carry out a funeral ceremony for someone we love. And so much of the information available on this critically important subject fails to focus on what is most important: having a personalized, meaningful funeral that helps families and friends begin the healing process of mourning after the death of someone we love.
Someone you love has died. You are now faced with the difficult, but important, need to mourn. Mourning is the open expression of your thoughts and feelings regarding the death and the person who died. It is an essential part of healing. THE BEST!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I want to express my sincere and heartfelt thank you for all that you did for my Mother’s Celebration of Life service. Your professionalism, patience, kindness, and personal care… There are just no words to express how very much it meant!
You are truly an angel and I want to say thank you to you and everyone at OH Smith for the gentle care that they extended to my family. Your "family-like" care in the funeral service business was unmatched!

Me and my family went in to get a consultation for services for my father the gentlemen rudely greeted my family. He made us wait in the lobby for no reason. Then he insulted us by saying that we have the price list what did we need. Well first we needed to be greeted with respect and then maybe a brief explanation of the services in detail because we are a grieving family.

Mr. Smith, his daughter Chevala Painter, Mrs. Harris, Larry Copeland, and those we didn't personally meet, gave fabulous service to my family and me. They prepared my mother's body in a loving and caring fashion. The image I had of her immediately after her passing was not pretty. But the image of her I received at the family viewing has helped me in my healing and grieving process. My mother had pre-planned her funeral and OH Smith honored their contract with her... no problems! No wonder she and my other relatives have patronized OH Smith for over a decade!! O. H. SMITH, YOU ROCK!!! Thank you

My family has entrusted all of our deceased family members to this funeral home. Everyone is always very professional and kind. My mother passed recently and when my sister and I went to discuss the arrangements, I had my twin 6 year old grandsons with me. The staff was very accommodating and made me feel at ease. I didnt have to worry about them in the front lobby. The Smith family is awesome to work with. They are quick and efficient. Thank you for taking great care of my mother.
